Radio host reveals the shocking infection she contracted during Bali holiday that was ‘worst than childbirth’

An Australian radio broadcaster shared their experience of a severe viral illness they caught while enjoying a lavish vacation in Bali.

Jodie Oddy, a co-host on the Adelaide breakfast show of Nova 919 alongside Andrew Hayes, shared her harrowing experience of a vacation gone wrong when she contracted shingles.

On Instagram, the Channel Ten reporter posted a picture of herself enjoying some downtime at the beachside pool, followed by another image showing her resting in bed with a rash of red spots on her upper body.

‘Insta V Reality. Shingles for the win,’ she captioned her post. ‘Good thanks.’

Later on, it became clear that Jodie’s pain was unbearable. Consequently, upon her return from the vacation, she immediately sought medical attention at the emergency room.

‘I got off the plane and went straight to hospital,’ she told the Adelaide Advertiser.

‘They did all the tests and I was told it is definitely shingles.’

Jodie appeared to be living it up in Bali before coming down with a case of shingles.

The radio star was seen lounging by the pool, enjoying an evening cocktail with her husband Greg, and watching the AFL from inside a sports bar.

The news about free shingles vaccinations for Australians emerged, following which Jodie contracted an infection.

Individuals classified as ‘moderate to high risk’ and within the age range of 18-64 years old are now eligible to receive the vaccination.

Individuals with pre-existing health issues like HIV or advanced kidney disease (stage five), as well as those undergoing specific treatments, are currently eligible.

Starting from November 1 of the previous year, both rounds of the vaccination have been provided without charge to individuals aged 65 and above, as well as Indigenous Australians who are 50 years old or older, under the National Immunization Program.

Shingles occurs when the varicella zoster virus, responsible for causing chickenpox in childhood, becomes active again later in life.

A common characteristic of this viral illness is that it can cause intense discomfort, accompanied by the emergence of clusters of fluid-filled bumps usually found on just one part of an individual’s body.

The rash can also be itchy.

Shingles can not only cause severe, stabbing discomfort but may also lead to additional health issues after recovery for some patients.

Most people suffering from shingles can expect symptoms to last two to three weeks.

But they can also experience nerve pain for months.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to shed some light on an important health matter. It’s quite common for individuals over the age of 50 to harbor a dormant form of the virus responsible for causing shingles. Approximately one out of every three people in this age group may experience an activation of this virus, leading to the development of the viral infection known as shingles.

Those who are immunocompromised have a two times higher chance at developing the virus.

Patients are urged to speak to their GP to check if they are eligible.
