Radio host Lauren Phillips breaks down on air after traumatic night with sick family member

As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I can empathize deeply with Lauren Phillips‘ emotional state as she recounted her traumatic experience involving her beloved dog Mala. While I don’t share her love for canines, I do understand the profound bond between humans and their pets, and how their illness or injury can leave us feeling helpless and distraught.

On Wednesday, Lauren Phillips struggled to hold back tears while narrating a distressing incident that involved her cherished dog, Mala.

In conversation with her NOVA colleague Jase Hawkins, aged 42, Lauren, also 41, confessed that she endured a challenging night on Tuesday due to her loyal pet experiencing two seizures.

‘I had a rough night last night, and I’m a bit emotional today,’ Lauren admitted on air.

Instead of crying, she finds it incredibly distressing as her beloved dog, Marla, who is more like a loyal companion, experienced two severe seizures during the night. This incident has left her in deep sorrow.

Reflecting on our shared history where Mala has had seizures before, I found myself taken aback by last night’s incident. I believed we had managed to keep the issue under control, so its reappearance came as a surprise to me.

“She’s experienced a few instances earlier, but I believed we had resolved the issue; however, last night, she suffered two intense seizures throughout the night,” she explained.

Moving forward, Lauren confessed that the predicament became even tougher because her affluent partner, Paul O’Brien, wasn’t present, and her brother and his spouse, along with their newborn, were staying over, which she preferred not to disturb.

Around 10 PM last night, I was sound asleep when I suddenly heard a loud boom, causing me to wonder, “What was that?”

“I switched on the lights, and her seizure was quite distressing – similar to what you might experience when observing someone or even an animal convulsing, it can be highly upsetting.”

Lauren mentioned that her veterinarian had shown her how to handle such situations, giving her confidence that she could manage it following the initial seizure.

Lauren explained, “For the first time, something occurred that I didn’t immediately rush her to the vet. Instead, they guided me on how to handle the situation, and I thought, ‘I’ve got this.’ I decided to try managing it myself.”

Around three in the morning, she experienced another severe seizure. Consequently, I rushed her to the emergency veterinary clinic located at Care in Collingwood. The staff there is fantastic, operating around the clock, and they are truly exceptional. At present, she’s receiving care down there.

Lauren, with obvious emotion, expressed that although those two episodes lasted just ‘minutes’, they seemed as if they had gone on forever.

In a tearful confession, Lauren described, ‘Though it lasted merely a few minutes, it seemed an eternity, and its intensity was striking, as if she were frothing at the mouth. It was undeniably terrible.’

Besides having children, my canines serve multiple roles for me. One is like a protective officer, another as a soothing companion. We’ve shared countless experiences together. Honestly, this situation has been quite distressing.

Today, I managed not to shed tears at work, but I couldn’t help it. Afterward, I rushed home, took a shower, and then found myself thinking, “Of course, I have to go to work.” However, the feeling of powerlessness is overwhelming when your beloved pets are unwell.

‘So, yeah, she’s at the vet, and hopefully she’ll be fine, but I’m just really rattled today.’

As a long-time fan of music, I’ve experienced many moments when a particular song resonates deeply with my emotions. This morning, Lauren’s story reminded me of an instance from my own life that was strikingly similar.

As a person who has gone through my fair share of emotional rollercoasters, I can understand her feelings all too well. Hearing that sad tune while driving to work might have triggered a flood of memories and emotions for her, making it difficult for her to compose herself. It’s not uncommon for music to evoke strong feelings within us, and it seems like she was deeply affected by the song she heard. I hope she finds some peace and solace as the day progresses.
