Radio host Ali Clarke reveals the 'toughest conversation' she had to have with her young children following shock cancer diagnosis: 'Devastating'

As a dedicated follower of Ali Clarke’s inspiring journey, I find myself deeply moved by her courage and resilience. Her life experience has taught us that even in the face of adversity, one can maintain hope, honesty, and love for their family. The heartbreaking conversation she had with her children about her breast cancer diagnosis was undoubtedly a difficult moment, yet her ability to remain strong for them is truly commendable.

Radio star Ali Clarke had a ‘devastating’ conversation with her young children following her shock breast cancer diagnosis.

In late July, the co-host of the morning show “Max & Ali” on an Adelaide radio station, alongside Max Burford, had a mastectomy following the discovery of tumors by her doctor.

On Monday, she wrote a piece for The Advertiser about the tearful instance when she informed her three kids that she wasn’t well.

As a devoted partner, I share my life with Eloise (age 13), Sam (age 11), and Madelyn (age 8) – all of whom are part of the family of my AFLW head coaching spouse, Matthew Clarke.

She wrote: ‘Telling our three young children was single handedly one of the easiest, yet toughest conversations I will ever have in my life.’

Straightforward, as Matt and I immediately agreed it was essential for them to be informed, and we felt it crucial to maintain our honesty since if we breached their trust, they might not believe us when we assured them that mom would recover.

‘Extremely painful, as not only was it heartbreaking to imagine missing their graduation, wedding, and growing old, but I had to maintain composure to minimize their pain as much as possible.’

Ali mentioned that her kids reacted with tears upon hearing the news, and they posed questions predominantly concerning themselves.

After a series of events, everything turned out splendidly, culminating in us sharing a cozy day indoors, cuddled beneath a duvet while enjoying films according to their preferences.

The radio host mentioned that her kids tend to grab her hand more frequently and inquire about her well-being at unanticipated moments, yet they seem to be generally handling her cancer diagnosis well overall.

Her announcement that she would be resuming work only a few weeks following her tearful disclosure of a breast cancer diagnosis, made live on air, has just taken place.

Last month, during the broadcast, Ali unexpectedly came back to talk about her recovery. She then shared that she’d be resuming work only a few days after the show.

Max wondered if you might be growing restless, considering the cabin fever setting in, and if perhaps you’re ready to return to work?

“Ali shared that she’ll resume broadcasting tomorrow at 6 a.m., which brought joy to Max and her temporary replacement, Hayley Pearson,” (or) “Tomorrow at 6 a.m., Ali will return to the airwaves, making Max and Hayley Pearson, who was filling in, happy.”

Ali confessed that she was thrilled about going back to work, since she had already exhausted her options for activities during her free time.
