Radio host Ali Clarke announces she’ll be returning to work after undergoing surgery following shock cancer diagnosis
As an ardent fan of Ali Clarke, I must say that her resilience and determination to return to work just one month after her breast cancer diagnosis is nothing short of inspiring. Her spirit, much like the Viking series she’s exhausted, is epic!
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that, despite the recent heart-wrenching breast cancer diagnosis I shared publicly, Radio star Ali Clarke has announced her return to work barely a month later.
Approximately two weeks ago, the morning radio host from Adelaide, who shares the show “Max & Ali in the Morning” with Max Burford, had a mastectomy procedure.
On the broadcast on Tuesday, Ali unexpectedly came back to talk about her recovery and shared that she will resume work the following day, which is Wednesday morning.
Max inquired, “Given how you’re beginning to feel restless and cooped up, does it seem like you might be ready to return to work?”
‘Tomorrow morning at 6am I will be back on the air,’ Ali revealed, much to the delight of Max.
Hayley Pearson, who had been filling in for Ali, was also quite chuffed with the news.
‘Thank God, because I’m busy,’ Hayley joked.
Ali confessed that she looked forward to going back to work since she had grown bored with her free time activities.
“Ali was really fed up,” he expressed. “The Olympics are finished, I’ve binge-watched all the Vikings on Netflix, yet I’ve barely made a dent in the leopard design for my cross stitch project.”
For me, the Olympics were simply incredible. In fact, I found myself volunteering to organize our Olympic group’s WhatsApp trivia competition.
Since the Tokyo games, we’ve been part of a WhatsApp trivia group. Given that I was the one who followed it live throughout, I felt motivated to compose some rather esoteric trivia questions for the group.
Apart from honing her knowledge in trivia, Ali also emphasized that one valuable insight she gained during her experience is that everyone’s path to recovery is distinct and individualized.
Ali mentioned that he had a conversation with a friend of his who underwent a mastectomy towards the end of last year, and she is younger than him. This friend is not only an ex-Olympian but also an extraordinary person overall. When he called her to inquire about her recovery, she casually mentioned that she hiked Mount Lofty just two weeks after the surgery. This significant mountain peak resides within South Australia’s Southern Mount Lofty Ranges.
Ali, wife of Adelaide AFL Women’s league head coach Matthew Clarke, initially found this confession quite intimidating.
‘I looked at Matt and said: ‘Number one, no way and number two, I can’t do that now,’ she laughed.
‘That is the one thing that I’ve worked through in all of this – no matter what you’re going through – if it’s chronic pain, surgery, recovering from a baby, becoming a dad for the first time, we’ve really just got to lay off and understand that its really individual for every single person,’ she added.
Late last month, Ali disclosed her medical condition publicly over the airwaves, informing her audience that she was going to step away from the program temporarily for therapy sessions.
She initially believed the cancer was tiny and controllable. However, upon further examination, she discovered multiple small tumors. As a result, she’s scheduled for a significant operation later this week, and she’ll need to take some time off to heal, as you can understand.
After her operation, Ali phoned the program to share how her healing process was progressing, acknowledging that she was faring quite well.
I was informed by Ali that her surgery extended over numerous hours. She’s now waiting for the test results to determine if additional treatment might be necessary.
Hayley then asked: ‘Have you been able to have a look at it yet? Or was it all wrapped up?’
Ali replied, “Even though we’re bundled up, it turned out to be less intimidating than I imagined it would be.”
My greatest comfort came when my children entered, and upon asking if they’d like to see, they agreed unanimously without showing any signs of discomfort.
