Radio 2 star DJ Spoony hospitalised for emergency brain surgery after a month of headaches – as Davina McCall reaches out to share support after her tumour battle
2-star DJ Spoony has disclosed that he underwent an urgent brain surgery during the Christmas season, which necessitated his hospitalization.
On Tuesday, he posted about the news on Instagram, including several images showing him throughout the process.
54-year-old DJ Spoony received an outpouring of love and support from his friends and dear ones, among them being Davina McCall, who underwent a procedure to take out a brain tumor more recently.
John St John Joseph BEM, the disc jockey, disclosed that his prolonged monthly headache led medical professionals to uncover a brain hemorrhage.
On social media, he posted: “I had an absolutely fantastic Christmas! I’m deeply thankful for everything it made clear to me. For all that I possess. For the abundance of love, hugs, and warm feelings.
It’s been around three or four weeks since I’ve been experiencing this persistent headache, and on Saturday, 21st, I decided to visit the emergency room to have it examined (as I don’t usually suffer from such issues).
After performing some examinations, they proposed conducting a CT scan on me. The results indicated a minor brain hemorrhage (one that had ceased bleeding), which was exerting slight pressure on my brain, explaining the recurring headaches.
DJ Spoony went on to say, “They told me they were sending me to Adenbrooks for immediate surgery, which was surprising given that I had been consistently working and preparing throughout my period of headaches.
On December 24th at 2 am, I underwent a standard surgical procedure to treat my subdural hematoma in the hospital, where I had stayed for four nights prior. The operation went smoothly and within just ten minutes of completion, I was back in my ward, awake and conversing, with no lingering effects from the general anesthesia.
I was eagerly anticipating enjoying a banana next to my bed, as I hadn’t eaten anything since 1 pm the day before. That banana was simply delicious…and the ginger shot was spot-on perfection.
Having battled with a persistent headache for four long weeks, I can confidently say that the sudden disappearance of it was nothing short of miraculous. The relief was instantaneous and overwhelming, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from my mind. It’s experiences like these that remind me of the resilience of the human body and the unpredictability of life. I am grateful for this momentary peace atop my head, and I hope it lasts for a long time to come.
On Christmas Day, I found myself awake in a hospital bed. Overwhelmed with gratitude, as I had a wonderful occasion to anticipate – returning home to my beloved family and friends. These remarkable individuals had stood by me during the previous days, offering visits, support, calls, messages. Such acts of kindness left me deeply moved.
It was unfortunate to wake up close to those who didn’t recognize their surroundings, as they likely wouldn’t see their loved ones for most or even all of the day. Every day, I reflect on them and wish them well on their path to healing and recovery.
In an unexpected twist, I decided to return home earlier than anticipated to catch everyone off guard. The joy on Laura’s face when she saw me was truly a sight to behold.
I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Bedford Hospital for performing the scan, and to Addenbrokes for finishing the task so efficiently. You truly are the epitome of excellence in healthcare. My sincere thanks go out to all the nurses, doctors, and health assistants who took care of me during this time. I also want to acknowledge the NHS for their unwavering service. Lastly, my gratitude extends to Richard Hughes, Michael Edwards, Arne Slot, and Mo Salah. Thank you for everything!
