Racing Legends Highlight Bonhams’ Upcoming Watch Sale in Hong Kong

Summary

  • Bonhams’ Hong Kong Watch Auction on May 23 will feature rare, racing-inspired watches
  • Highlights include a Richard Mille UP-01 Ferrari and an Audemars Piguet Laptimer Schumacher
  • Sale also offers rare Patek Philippe and Piaget stone-dial timepieces

Towards the end of this month, Bonhams is set to showcase an event in Hong Kong titled “Bonhams Watches,” where they will display a carefully selected array of remarkable timepieces. These pieces range from watches inspired by racing themes, as well as other unique and uncommon timekeepers from esteemed watchmakers and Maisons.

Highlighting the sales are exceptional items hailing from Richard Mille, Audemars Piguet, and Patek Philippe, along with two remarkable collections curated by a single owner. Among the selection, a striking ultra-thin Richard Mille UP-01 Ferrari 2024 limited edition catches the eye. This timepiece underscores Richard Mille’s dedication to exploring design and engineering frontiers, culminating in a stunning piece that boasts a mere thickness of 1.75mm and weighs an astonishing 2.82 grams. With just 150 units produced, this scarcely found watch is highly sought after by collectors, often referred to as a grail item.

2015’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher, a tribute to the renowned Formula 1 driver, is another notable item. This special edition of 20 timepieces features a forged carbon and titanium skeletonized flyback chronograph design. Being a limited release in pristine, new condition, it’s an exciting addition to any collection.

Additional aspects of the racing motif feature the Hublot LaFerrari watch model from approximately 2018. Similar to other limited editions, this timepiece boasts a carbon fiber, titanium, and diamond-encrusted skeletonized vertical tourbillon design. The design is influenced by the LaFerrari supercar, showcasing visible internal mechanisms that resemble the car’s engine components.

This sale includes a unique, 2019 Richard Mille Bonbon Collection “Sucette” watch, which is being sold at auction for the first time. Known for its eye-catching, sweet-themed design, this timepiece boasts a stylish combination of ceramic and pink gold in its case.

The Hong Kong Watch Sale will additionally honor the craftsmanship in watchmaking through Patek Philippe’s “Rare Handcrafts” watches. Highlighted pieces include a scarcely available, limited-edition Patek Philippe Calatrava “Mount Everest” from around 2015, a white gold watch boasting a Cloisonné enamel dial. Similarly, there’s a restricted, limited-edition Patek Philippe Calatrava “Dom Robert” from approximately 2022, a white gold and diamond-encrusted wristwatch showcasing a Grisaille enamel dial with a bird motif, inspired by the tapestries of the French artist-monk. The sale also offers neo-vintage timepieces and Piaget watches featuring exceptional stone dials from two distinct, individual collections.

The sale of watches by Bonhams will occur at their auction house situated at Six Pacific Place on the 23rd of May, 2025 in Hong Kong.
