Rachel Zegler reveals her ‘worst’ Hollywood audition as she avoids addressing Snow White drama

Rachel Zegler reveals her 'worst' Hollywood audition as she avoids addressing Snow White drama

I, Rachel Zegler, shared my most challenging film musical audition experience during a visit to Late Night With Seth Meyers last Thursday.

23-year-old actress who portrayed Snow White in a recent production, faced criticism for her controversial remarks toward Trump supporters, further discussed her upcoming project with Netflix – a movie named ‘Spellbound’ where she will be recording music for it.

The star has found herself entangled in controversy, having openly expressed her dislike for the initial 1937 Snow White cartoon. However, during the conversation, no mention was made of the forthcoming Disney remake.

During the recent episode, Zegler, adorned in a Michael Kors outfit, delved into the homemade video she submitted as part of her audition process for the character of Maria in the 2021 movie adaptation of West Side Story.

In a sea of 30,000 other auditions, Rachel landed the role in the film, and she shared with Meyers, “It’s unbelievable! I’m grateful for it every day…

She confessed, “Indeed, I submitted a video audition. It was the most disappointing video you could imagine. I can’t fathom how I landed the role.

Later on, Zegler shared that the recording is utilized as a learning tool for prospective casting directors at NYU. When they inquired about it, she questioned, “Is it a positive demonstration or a negative one?

She humorously continued, ‘Please don’t let me be the bad example in your college course.’

Myers playfully remarked, “Imagine a teacher saying, ‘Despite being rejected by 30,000 others, this is still wrong. Let me explain why it’s wrong! We shouldn’t build our careers on such outcomes.’

Host clarified that her portrayal of Maria was inspired by the characters from the classic Broadway production, “Romeo and Juliet”. Currently, she shares the stage with Kit Connor in this production.

When asked if playing a role in West Side Story assisted her in debuting on Broadway in Shakespeare’s renowned play, Rachel confirmed, “Indeed.

If anything, it provided me with an even greater understanding and admiration for the extensive research that Tony Kushner, who adapted our script for West Side Story, undertook.

Additionally, he motivated us to revisit the works of Shakespeare, immerse ourselves in them deeply, as they would enlighten us immensely, and indeed they did. Now, when I approach them, it’s like returning home – a truly remarkable experience to be able to engage with them.

In this play, Rachel takes on the role of Juliet, and it is skillfully guided by director Sam Gold. The music for this performance is provided by none other than Jack Antonoff, who is well-known as Taylor Swift’s music producer.

Previews began last month on September 26, and opening night took place on October 24.

In simpler terms, the story revolves around two passionate lovers who are left unsupervised in a dangerous environment filled with violence. As destiny takes its course, they find themselves inexorably drawn toward a tragic end.

According to the official website, the passionate rush soon plunges into a harsh disorder with only one inevitable outcome.

During the closing moments of the interview, Zegler shared details about her newest venture, “Spellbound,” that became available on Netflix as of last Friday.

The movie featured a talented ensemble, with Rachel joining forces alongside stars like Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, and Jordan Fisher.

In the film, ‘Ellian, a resilient princess, embarks on a thrilling journey to rescue both her family and her kingdom when an enigmatic curse turns her royal parents, the King and Queen of Lumbria, into grotesque creatures.’ (According to IMDb)

Zegler revealed that she recorded music for the film inside the attic of her childhood home.

She clarified to Seth that the pandemic was the actual cause, and it happened to be a situation where composer Alan Menken and his team requested her to record some preliminary vocals.

He listens to the music this way because he wants to determine its placement within the narrative. However, there was no assurance that he would receive the role or even get a chance to be part of the film.

Rachel mentioned, “About two years after initially being asked, I found myself working on the music…There are tracks in the finished film that were actually recorded in my childhood home, specifically in my attic.

During the interview, Rachel was resplendent in a rose-patterned, strap top and a coordinating pleated skirt hailing from the Spring/Summer 2025 collection by Michael Kors.

The star had a middle parting in her long, dark hair that cascaded smoothly down beyond her shoulders.

In her recent public outing, she spoke up on Instagram stories soon after the 2024 presidential election results, criticizing those who cast their votes for Donald Trump. She expressed her sentiments by stating that she wishes they would never experience tranquility or harmony.

Later on, Rachel expressed regret for her earlier remarks by saying, ‘My feelings carried me away.’

‘Harboring hatred and anger has pushed us further and further from harmony and comprehension, and I regret my part in fueling the unfavorable conversation.’

The actress additionally penned down that she strongly upholds the idea that everyone deserves their own perspective, regardless of its difference with mine. I am dedicated to making constructive efforts towards a brighter future.

According to a recent report to DailyMail.com, there was a strong consideration among executives to drop Haley from the live-action Snow White project at Disney.

They wish they could ask her to be quiet now, but it’s already past that point. In fact, discussions about replacing Rachel from her role took place numerous times during filming in 2022.

According to the source, she was unpredictable and led to problems on set as she disagreed with changes made to the original movie’s storyline in the film production.

‘If she found the script unappealing, she shouldn’t have picked it up. Only later, once the movie was completed, did she begin causing a fuss.’

They went on to say that ‘She’s been quite challenging, and unfortunately, there’s no way to restrain her from speaking as she wishes. It’s common knowledge among us all how tough she can be.’

Currently, there’s no time left to postpone the release of the movie. Despite the concerns that her recent remarks and scandals might negatively impact the film, it seems unlikely.

If anything, the movie garners even more publicity and interest, boosting ticket sales. In this case, the movie is ‘Snow White’, and it could potentially draw a larger audience with any notable actor in the lead role.

Previously, Rachel drew criticism from the public when she strongly criticized the 1937 version of Snow White.

In the upcoming Disney live-action reboot slated for release on March 21, 2025, she has been chosen to play Snow White.

In an interview, Zegler disclosed that the upcoming movie would take a fresh approach, with Snow White stating, “She won’t require rescue by the prince and her aspirations won’t revolve around true love.

The star also faced backlash when she was first cast as Snow White as a Latina actress.

In response to the criticism, Rachel wrote in a now-deleted post: “Yes, I am playing Snow White, but no, I am not bleaching my skin for the role.

As I celebrated my 23rd birthday last May, I took a moment to ponder over a challenging year I had experienced. You may recall some criticism directed towards me, labeling me as “woke” due to perceived disdain for the classic Disney movie. However, my intentions were always to promote understanding and empathy, not to criticize or belittle anyone’s love for this cherished piece of cinema.

Earlier this month, I was left stunned after reading about my beloved star, Zegler, sharing in an interview with Cosmopolitan that she’s faced with vile profanities due to the public outcry over her casting as Snow White. As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel upset and concerned about such unacceptable behavior towards someone who brings joy to so many of us through her talent.

‘They were showing up at my apartment and screaming profanities,’ she expressed to the outlet.

In relation to the dispute, the actress expressed, ‘Eventually, it stopped being amusing and I deeply disliked myself due to what others were saying about me.’

However, I’m proud of my resilience in overcoming that challenge and maintaining enthusiasm for the project I worked on.
