I find myself utterly captivated by the extraordinary life of Adam Somner, a man who mastered the art of filmmaking with such grace and passion that it left an indelible mark on countless films and the hearts of those who had the privilege to work alongside him. His journey through the world of cinema is nothing short of inspiring, as he seamlessly transitioned from being an Assistant Director to a Producer, leaving his imprint on some of the most iconic films of our time.

Rachel Zegler wrote a heartfelt message in memory of West Side Story producer, Adam Somner, who sadly passed away at the age of 57 on November 27th.

He passed away one day before Thanksgiving following a battle with anaplastic thyroid cancer, Deadline reported on Friday.

23-year-old actress who played Snow White, notably took on the role of Maria in the 2021 adaptation of the stage musical. Besides this, Somner served as the first assistant director for the Academy Award-nominated film, a project helmed by renowned director Steven Spielberg.

Zegler, fresh from disclosing what she considers her least successful audition in Hollywood, shared her memories on her Instagram Stories, reminiscing about her privilege of working side by side with Somner.

She penned, ‘I had the honor of making west side story with adam somner when I was seventeen years old.’

Not only did he elevate me effortlessly with kindness and compassion, but he also steadfastly supported me, preventing any missteps as I embarked on my journey through the realm of filmmaking. I couldn’t have asked for a more skilled or caring guide.

Rachel went on to say, ‘In a nutshell, I adored him, and so did all those who had the pleasure of working alongside him. He was uncommonly kind, incredibly efficient, delightfully eccentric, and exceptionally skilled in his profession.’

The actress remarked, “It seems unfair that he can’t participate in more, but I’m sending my heartfelt affection to his entire family and everyone fortunate enough to collaborate with him.

Zegler ended by saying, ‘I’ll always cherish it and carry it with me from now on. Adam Somner, you’re a real one. I already miss you.’

Besides the heartfelt message, she attached a brief clip showing her giving Somner a warm embrace during the filming of West Side Story.

Throughout his extensive career, Adam worked alongside several talented directors including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Steve McQueen in the film industry.

He boasts 20 producer credits, according to his IMDB profile, on movies like “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023), “West Side Story” (2021), “Licorice Pizza” (2021), “Ford v Ferrari” (2019), “Lincoln” (2012) and “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013).

Apart from his role as a director, Somner has held the position of first assistant director on numerous films such as War Horse, Killers of the Flower Moon, Licorice Pizza, Ready Player One, Phantom Thread, The Revenant, Lincoln, There Will Be Blood, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

In other productions, he assumed the position of a secondary assistant director for films like Hannibal (2001), Gladiator (2000), and G.I. Jane (1997).

After his death, Spielberg looked back on Somner’s career over the years and shared his thoughts in a statement, as well as reminiscing about the multiple movies they collaborated on together.

On his IMDb profile, Somner’s first credited role as a director was for the 1989 film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, a production helmed by Spielberg.

In simpler terms, the filmmaker expressed that the title “Assistant Director” did not adequately represent Adam Somner’s role or impact on his films. Just like how a left arm is more than merely an assistant to the right, Adam was much more than just an Assistant Director to him.

1) In his role as an Assistant Director and Producer, he poured equal amounts of dedication into each position. His passion for cinema was evident, whether he was behind the scenes or on the movie set. For him, it was like being on a football field.

In some instances, it was unclear whether he was mimicking my actions as the leader or if I was mirroring his moves instead.

Steven mentioned that Somner made everyone who became a part of the team feel as if they belonged to an extended family.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I can confidently say that I was a master of unity. In times when circumstances took an unexpected turn, my unique blend of working-class British wit and humor came into play. A subtle mix of under-the-breath muttering, hearty laughter, and an ever-ready backup plan were my secret weapons to diffuse even the most challenging situations.

“Adam was a trailblazer in his profession and served as a beacon for those aspiring to pursue production work. His contributions were not only about organization, but also creativity. Returning to work without him will undoubtedly be a different experience.

Scorsese expressed sorrow over Adam’s death too, stating in a message: “Adam Somner wasn’t just an Assistant Director and Producer on three of my movies; his impact went beyond the credits. He was truly an integral part of those films, more so than any title could fully convey.

Adam possessed unique traits, reminiscent of a skilled military commander. His organizational skills were exceptional, while his discipline was unwavering, comparable to that on the battlefield.

‘Works harmoniously, almost like two dancers synchronizing their moves or two musicians improvising together, with me or any director. Additionally, possesses exceptional creativity in arranging and coordinating movements within a shot, showcasing extraordinary artistry.’

Martin went on to say, ‘Adam Somner lived and worked embodying everything. Without him, I wouldn’t have been able to create The Wolf of Wall Street or Killers of the Flower Moon, and we were in the midst of organizing another collaboration.’

‘He departed from us much sooner than expected, leaving a void that cannot be filled. His affectionate term for his work was “making pictures,” which he did exceptionally well. He was an exceptional team player, and I am confident that other directors would concur with my sentiments.’

Paul Thomas Anderson worked alongside Somner on ventures like Licorice Pizza, The Phantom Thread, and There Will Be Blood.

Outside of filming locations, the duo fostered a strong bond – with Anderson serving as the best man at Adam’s wedding in 2011.

Paul put it this way: “Adam had a deep passion for filmmaking that surpassed any other individual in the film industry’s past. He lived and breathed it. Moreover, he created an environment of safety and comfort for anyone who collaborated with him.

‘He saw everything from all sides at once and had a back up plan to the back up plan to the back up plan. He moved mountains and trucks and people like he was moving a salt shaker across a table. It was glorious to watch him work.’

“The director stated that no one surpassed him in the art of filmmaking; his intuition and skill were matched only by his extraordinary wit and compassion. However, it was his generosity that truly set him apart.

For the fortunate few who have the opportunity to work alongside him, it’s clear that our workdays will never feel quite the same or be as enjoyable.

Anderson stated that he considers this person to be in the league of legends like Kobe Bryant, Mick Jagger, and Winston Churchill, but even that doesn’t fully capture his greatness.

In the latest instance, Somner served as the first-time director and producer on the 2024 movie titled “Blitz.” This production was overseen by Steve McQueen, who also penned and directed it.

Prior to his death, Adam was engaged in a project that involved a future Paul Thomas Anderson movie featuring Leonardo DiCaprio.

A DGA (Director’s Guild of America) scholarship will be established under his name, per Deadline.

Somner’s family members who are left behind include his wife, Carmen Ruiz de Huidobro, as well as his children, Olivia and Bosco. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Mark Somner.
