Rachel Zegler Opens Up About Receiving Backlash For Her Political Opinions And Snow White Comments

Rachel Zegler, a budding talent in Hollywood, often faces criticism from the media and internet, despite her widely acclaimed performances in films such as “West Side Story” and “The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” However, the most recent source of public backlash towards her has been her political opinions expressed during the promotional tour for Disney’s latest live-action adaptation, “Snow White.” At 24 years old, Zegler is now addressing these criticisms.

During an interview with ID Magazine, Zegler discussed online harassment and her continued vocal stance, despite facing criticism. The actress articulated that her empathy and firm convictions on international matters are not confined by her celebrity status, but rather, she believes her fame empowers her to express her views more forcefully and advocate for justice. She expressed this thought as:

“My compassion and strong opinions about global issues aren’t held back because I’m a movie star. In fact, my celebrity status provides me with a greater platform to voice my opinions and stand up against injustice.

The subject is quite fascinating. At times, it can be quite concerning… Just like Hannah Einbinder from the show Hacks, I strongly agree that when we have a platform, we also have a responsibility to use it as we see fit. My empathy knows no limits, and my backing for one cause does not imply disregard for any others. This sentiment has always been fundamental to who I am as an individual. It’s a reflection of the way I was brought up.

Celebrities, particularly young female entertainers, often encounter resistance when they delve into topics outside of entertainment. However, the level of hostility directed towards Zegler seems to surpass what others have experienced recently. This backlash intensified after she was open about the flaws in the original Snow White movie and expressed that her portrayal of the character would embody greater independence and decision-making than previously shown. Some Disney fans perceived this as a slight against the original material, and they turned on her swiftly. Some even accused Zegler’s perspective as being the reason for the underperformance of the live-action Snow White at the box office.

Beyond expressing her views in the media, Zegler has become more vocal about international and national politics, as well as instances she perceives as inhumane. Her courage to champion the voiceless has earned admiration from some, but has had a negative impact on her career. In fact, Variety reported that the producer of “Snow White,” Marc Platt, traveled to meet with her and requested she remove certain social media posts. However, Zegler declined, and she reaffirmed her decision in this interview, stating:

*In this interview, she maintained her stance.*

It’s clear that speaking openly has its risks, but no gain is worth sacrificing innocent lives. I may wear my heart on my sleeve, and if vulnerability is seen as a weakness, then so be it – there are greater flaws.

Regardless of opinions, Zegler remains firm in her decisions and garnering fan support. Her mental wellbeing appears to be under control, given her openness about seeking therapy amidst media scrutiny. In her own words:

“Despite the controversy, I stand by my choices, and I’m grateful for the support from fans. As for my mental health, it’s been a priority for me during this media storm, and I’ve sought the help of a therapist throughout it all.

My psychologist has been by my side throughout everything I’ve experienced. They acknowledged that what I was experiencing wasn’t typical, which provided immense comfort and relief to me in various aspects of my life.

It’s great that Rachel Zegler, the actress from Shazam 2, demonstrates wisdom and poise amidst the criticism, and she continues to move forward at a rapid pace. Despite the negative feedback, she remains undeterred. At present, Zegler is captivating audiences with her performance in Evita on the West End stage, and it’s already receiving rave reviews. If you can’t make it to London to witness her brilliance live, fans can catch Zegler in the live-action remake of Snow White, which is now available for streaming through a Disney+ subscription.
