Rachel Zegler explains Snow White’s new name origin in remake

As a seasoned gamer and a lover of all things Disney, I must say I am genuinely excited about the upcoming live-action remake of “Snow White.” Rachel Zegler’s portrayal of our beloved princess is not only refreshing but also a testament to the power of representation.

Rachel Zegler has explained Snow White’s new name origin in Disney’s live-action remake.

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the talented star from “West Side Story” is set to portray the princess in an upcoming reimagining of the 1812 German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, originally titled “Snow White.” In this modern retelling, Gal Gadot, known for her role as Wonder Woman, will embody the Evil Queen.

In addition to the cast of “The Front Room,” Andrew Burnap will join the musical’s lineup as a fresh character named Jonathan. Also appearing are Ansu Kabia, Dujonna Gift, Martin Klebba, and Colin Michael Carmichael.

In a recent chat with Variety, Zegler shared an alteration in the backstory of her character for the upcoming remake.

In my perspective, unlike the 1937 animated timeless masterpiece that portrayed the princess with skin as white as snow, the live-action adaptation draws its unique and captivating title from a distinct source of inspiration.

According to Zegler, the story she tells is a different version of “Snow White,” one that’s rooted in history. In this tale, Snow White survived a snowstorm as an infant. To commemorate her survival and strength, the king and queen named her Snow White. The key message in our film for everyone, especially young women and young people, is to remember your own inner strength.

The news about Zegler being cast sparked some negative feedback from internet trolls who disapproved of the studio’s choice due to her ethnicity. However, Zegler expressed her sadness over this reaction and emphasized the significance of portraying a Latina princess on-screen.

Additionally, she shared that her inspiration came from Brandy Norwood, who made history as the first African American actress to portray Cinderella in the 1997 live-action adaptation of the classic tale.

In her own words, “I was raised in a home where she was recognized as Cinderella,” Zegler expressed. “Of course, we watched the animated version. Yet, a child’s imagination is truly astonishing, as it can simply accept ‘that’s Cinderella.’

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating reimagining of “Snow White” is set to be directed by none other than Marc Webb, who brought Spider-Man’s amazing web-slinging adventures to life! This modern take on the classic tale also boasts a remarkable collaboration between Greta Gerwig, director of the iconic Barbie film, and Erin Cressida Wilson, renowned for her work on The Girl on the Train. Mark your calendars for March 2025, when we’ll all be able to witness this magical reinterpretation unfold on the big screen!

Speaking about Zegler, she’s gracefully stepping onto the Broadway stage for the first time, portraying Juliet Capulet in a modern take on William Shakespeare’s classic play, “Romeo and Juliet.” The role of Romeo is being brought to life by Kit Connor, who you might recognize from “Heartstopper.

Ever since its debut performance a week ago (on September 26th), this production has been earning rave reviews from both audiences and critics. Many have commended the principal actors for delivering stunningly beautiful performances.

The Snow White remake will be released in cinemas on March 21, 2025.
