If this is meant to be the beginning of a Rachel Zegler comeback tour, it’s off to a rough start.
The actress starring in Disney’s new live-action Snow White is speaking out again, this time to Harper’s Bazaar UK, about the criticism the movie – and her own actions – have received recently.
Instead of showing a shift in attitude after the movie’s disappointing performance, Rachel Zegler’s recent statements seem to reinforce the same ideas that have made her a controversial figure in Hollywood.
During the interview, Zegler explained most of the criticism she’s received by focusing on how her identity and what people expect from her play a role.

She explained that she was told she didn’t fit the mold for roles in West Side Story and Snow White – she was seen as ‘too much’ of one thing and ‘not enough’ of another. This was confusing for her as a young woman in her twenties. Growing up, she was very proud of her Colombian heritage – the food, clothes, and traditions were central to her identity as a child and still are today. However, she felt that being seen as multiple things sometimes meant being seen as nothing at all, especially in the public eye. Despite this, she firmly believes in staying true to herself and refuses to change to make others more comfortable.
The actress shared how the negative reaction affected her mental health, and explained that therapy has been a valuable tool in helping her cope with it.
Zegler expressed a desire for open and widespread conversations about mental and emotional wellbeing. She believes everyone should have the resources and understanding to explore their own feelings.

She seemed to recognize how strongly people had reacted to her statements over the last few years.
Looking back at everything that happened – all the danger and threats – she said she wishes she’d just gotten rid of her phone. She believes anyone in her situation would have felt the same way.
However, some critics feel the interview didn’t truly address the harm caused by the controversial statements. They point out that even the most critical moment focused more on the resulting problems than on the problematic statements themselves.
The Snow White Controversy That Never Went Away
Disney’s live-action Snow White remake faced scrutiny long before it ever reached theaters.
The project went through a long period of discussion and disagreement regarding its artistic choices, the political ideas it conveyed, and how the studio was trying to update a beloved animated film from 1937 for today’s viewers.

Zegler gained significant attention for the controversy surrounding the film, largely due to her consistent critiques of the original in interviews.
When asked about the changes made to the remake, she firmly stated that they were necessary, explaining simply, “It needed that.”
As a longtime viewer of the original, I have to say a lot of the reaction to Disney’s remake felt… concerning. It really seemed like they weren’t trying to recapture the magic of the classic, but instead were more interested in injecting modern political ideas into the story. It left many of us feeling like the heart of the original was lost.

When the film finally debuted in theaters, the results were disastrous.
Despite a long and troubled production, including numerous delays, costly reshoots, and a budget that soared into the hundreds of millions, Disney’s Snow White failed to draw viewers and quickly became one of the company’s biggest box office disappointments in years.
A Pattern Of Controversy
The backlash surrounding Zegler didn’t originate from a single interview or public comment.
Rather than happening all at once, the situation unfolded gradually through a series of events that consistently drew the actress into online disputes and criticism.
Look, as a movie fan, I get wanting to update classics, but when Rachel Zegler was promoting the new Snow White movie, some of her comments about the original rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. She basically said the 1937 film hadn’t aged well, pointing out, pretty directly, that times have changed. It felt a little dismissive to some of us who grew up with the original, you know?

She also criticized the original Snow White story, pointing out that the Prince essentially stalks her and describing parts of it as strange and unsettling.
When talking about the new version of the story, she said her character wouldn’t be focused on finding true love. Instead, she’d be dreaming of achieving her full potential as a leader. She even playfully suggested they could remove the male romantic lead from the story altogether.
Outside of the film itself, Zegler became embroiled in political controversy on social media.
After the 2024 election, she made a statement online wishing ‘no peace’ for President Trump and those who supported him, which caused a strong negative reaction.

She received backlash for adding political commentary about global events to the promotion of Snow White, specifically connecting the trailer’s release to the situation in the Middle East.
Reports show that the backlash sparked threats of violence against Gal Gadot, the Israeli actress, and her children. Disney allegedly responded by increasing security for Gadot and her family due to the severity of the situation.
I’m hearing that the film’s producer actually asked Rachel Zegler to take down a social media post after the threats started rolling in, but she refused. It seems she stood her ground, which I think is pretty admirable, honestly.

Zegler also joined the online criticism of Gina Carano, who was fired from Disney+’s The Mandalorian after a public controversy.
These events combined to create a public image of the actress that many feel eclipsed her talent and performances.
Hollywood Distance And A Possible Comeback
What’s been most interesting since the Snow White project failed is what occurred in the aftermath.
I have to admit, I’m a little surprised by what’s next for Rachel Zegler. Just a few years ago, everyone was talking about her after her fantastic debut in Spielberg’s West Side Story, and it seemed like she was poised to become a huge Disney star. But looking at her upcoming projects, it’s… surprisingly quiet for someone who just led a big studio film. It makes you wonder what’s going on behind the scenes.

Following the movie’s release, Zegler went back to performing on stage. Currently, she has just one announced film project: a smaller, independent movie called She Gets It From Me.
Considering how long she was predicted to be directing big-budget films, her current workload is surprisingly manageable.
Some people think the recent Harper’s Bazaar interview might be an effort to improve her public image after the negative reaction to the Snow White project.
Whether that effort succeeds remains to be seen.
Instead of addressing the reasons people were upset by her earlier statements, Zegler’s recent comments focus again on how identity and public image are the main sources of the criticism.
Can Rachel Zegler Mount a Comeback?
Hollywood comeback stories typically come later in an actor’s career.
They rarely begin at age 24.
Just a few years ago, Rachel Zegler quickly became known as a rising star in Hollywood after appearing in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.

Lately, discussions about her work haven’t focused as much on what she’s going to be filming next, and more on the issues that have come up since the Snow White project began.
Look, as a movie fan, I’m just saying, if she keeps repeating the same arguments that got everyone upset initially, it’s going to be a really tough climb back into Hollywood’s good books. It could take a long, long time for people to forgive and forget.
