Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor dish on 'awesome' Romeo + Juliet audience - as play debuts on Broadway

As a dedicated theater enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Romeo + Juliet is shaping up to be an unforgettable production. The in-the-round setup at the Circle in the Square Theatre adds a unique and engaging dimension to this classic tale, allowing for an intimate connection between the actors and the audience.

Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor, who starred together in Romeo & Juliet, are sharing insights about the much-awaited stage production following its premiere on Broadway last week.

In this contemporary reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s sad story directed by Sam Gold (who won a Tony Award), they take on the roles of the main characters who are star-crossed lovers, with performances running until February 2025.

In the latest episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, the pair delved into their experience performing at the Circle in the Square Theatre, highlighting how the unique in-the-round layout fosters engaging audience interactions.

Rachel shared with Fallon, “I can already tell everyone is here, and it’s fantastic to sense that there’s actually an audience, even though we’re still early into the previews.

She revealed that viewers in the front row will respond ‘verbally’ to the lines uttered during the show.

In Rachel’s own words, she recounted saying, “Isn’t it fascinating how a book with such crucial information is so neatly enclosed?” To which someone from the audience responded, “Not really.” But Rachel found it thrilling.

Kit said the ‘exact same thing’ happened to him before.

‘I had the exact same thing with, I think, the same person on the same night,’ the British hunk said.

After an intense argument, I found myself breathless, unsure of my next move. Then, I heard a voice saying softly, “Romeo, leave.

‘My immediate thought was just like, “Wow, she’s really into it,”‘ Kit said with a laugh.

Last Thursday, Romeo and Juliet started their preliminary shows at the Circle in the Square Theatre. This production signifies the first appearance on Broadway for Rachel and Kit.

A month before previews began, Romeo + Juliet received a four-week extension due to high demand.

On the very same day, Zegler enthusiastically broadcasted the latest news to her 2.2 million Instagram followers with great excitement.

She twirled around wearing a violet cropped top, holding the script of Romeo and Juliet, and expressed her ideas through a post’s caption.

She shared that she’ll be starring in her Broadway debut, working with her ideal director, at her preferred theater alongside an exceptional cast. The demand is so high that the show has been extended for a full month, meaning she gets to perform until February 16.

The Snow White sensation added a string of smiley emoji with red hearts.

She also noted, ‘There isn’t a happier girl in the world this morning.’

Rehearsals recently kicked off ahead of the opening night show on October 24.

Tommy Dorfman, a member of the cast, posted on the Instagram caption for Romeo & Juliet, “We are…??” to express excitement about the extension news.

And Rachel joined in, cleverly commenting, ‘art thou???????’

In April, Rachel and Kit first sparked enthusiasm among their followers by posting the letters R and J on their social networking sites.

In their posts, Connor shared a capital ‘R’, and Zegler shared a capital ‘J’ with overlapping parts that resemble half-addition symbols.

Both geotagged the posts as Verona, the location of the Shakespearean story.

In May, a fresh take on an enduring play was unveiled through a teaser, featuring the main characters in a contemporary suburban setting.
