Rachael Stirling: Fear of Famous Mom and Her TV Career Disapproval
Rachael Stirling has admitted she was ‘s*** scared’ of her famous mother Dame Diana Rigg.
47-year-old English actress admitted that her mother, Dame Diana Rigg, discouraged her from entering the world of show business and expressed disapproval towards her acting career.
‘I was s*** scared of her really,’ she confessed while speaking on the Rosebud podcast.
Rachael, known for her roles in Doctor Who, Tipping the Velvet, and The Bletchley Circle, commented: ‘She showed a hint of disdain and didn’t seem impressed with what I did… frankly, it wasn’t up to par.’
Rachel hinted that there could have been a touch of envy and rivalry between the late Dame Diana, who was once a Bond girl and passed away in 2020 at the age of 82, and herself.
‘I looked exactly like her, which was annoying when she was ageing,’ she went on.

‘She was quite white-knuckled about holding on to the reins and not letting me do it [acting].
As a diehard devotee, I found myself repeatedly thwarted in my dreams of joining the dramatic arts. Somehow, she had carefully guarded her craft and barred me from attending drama school, despite her being the one who held that precious skill.
Rachael is married to husband Guy Garvey, who is also an actor.
50-year-old actress and lead singer of Elbow got married at Manchester Town Hall in June 2016, following a year of courtship. They later welcomed their son, Jack, who is now six years old.
Rachael also previously spoke about the relationship that Guy had with her late mother.
Reflecting on their unique relationship, I’d say my mother and spouse experienced a truly extraordinary period, one that I refer to as an exceptionally special time, prior to my mother’s passing.
Rachel mentioned: “Guy held a special place in my mother’s heart. When we took her home to spend her final days in 2020, he showed such kindness and warmth, and I believe my mom developed feelings for him.
After the initial lockdown ended and he could return to his studio, she found joy in the prospect of him resuming his creative endeavors there.
Each morning, he’d enter her room to bid farewell and she would respond, “I enwrap you in the garment of inspiration. May the divine poets grace your presence.

Day after day, she’d perform this action, gradually losing strength until only a sluggish movement of her hands remained. At the end, all she managed to say was “Cloakie cloakie.” That’s why Guy named his home studio – Cloakie Cloakie.
Guy commented: ‘Rachael’s mom was extraordinary. It was an honor to spend the last month with her. We connected through conversations and poetry, sharing a common affection for the same songwriters.'”
This version maintains the original meaning while using slightly different words and sentence structure to make it easier to read.
During that moment, Rachael managed the medications as she dashed about, allowing me to enjoy the pleasant conversation. That period was truly unique and memorable for me.
