Queens of the Stone Age cancels eight shows so Josh Homme can have emergency surgery

As a longtime fan of Queens of the Stone Age and having followed their music journey for over two decades, I was deeply saddened to hear about Josh Homme’s sudden departure from their European tour due to an emergency surgery. The band’s announcement left fans feeling disappointed and frustrated, as eight shows were canceled in a row.

The European leg of Queens of the Stone Age’s tour has been put on hold, allowing lead singer Josh Homme to swiftly go back to the United States for urgent medical treatment.

The alt-rock band regrettably announced on social media on Tuesday that they had exhausted all possible ways to carry on with the remaining eight shows this summer, but unfortunately, they can no longer perform.

“We, the queens, are deeply sorry that we can’t perform for you. We understand if this causes any trouble for you and we feel the same way – frustrated and disappointed.”

Due to the unexpected departure of the singer-guitarist, the band members Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar), Michael Shuman (bass), Dean Fertita (keyboards), and Jon Theodore (drums) will not perform at festivals in France and Slovakia this week. Their shows in Berlin, Austria, Romania, Croatia, and Greece have also been canceled, as per the announcement. For more details, ticket holders are advised to check their respective festival websites. Direct communication from the point of purchase will be made to those holding tickets for the band’s headliner shows.

Queens deeply regret not being able to perform for you. We understand and sympathize with any inconvenience caused, and feel the same way about missing out on this opportunity as you do.

Last Friday, Queens of the Stone Age, known for their hits “No One Knows” and “The Way You Used to Do,” unexpectedly cancelled their performance at Italy’s AMA Festival. The reason given was illness, but it remained unclear which band member was affected. However, their scheduled August shows in Europe and North American concerts through November, as posted on their official website, remain undisturbed as of Wednesday.

On Wednesdays, a representative from the organization failed to provide further remarks upon The Times’ demand for more information right away.

A 51-year-old man, who hails from Palm Desert and made a name for himself in the music industry there, received a cancer diagnosis in 2022. He has since reportedly made a full recovery following surgery. However, it’s uncertain if this latest surgery, which was described as an emergency procedure without further details, is connected to his cancer battle.

In the mid-1990s, Homme co-founded the groundbreaking stoner-metal band Kyuss. Later, in 2001, he gained significant recognition as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter for Queens of the Stone Age with their critically acclaimed album “Rated R.” He has additionally collaborated with Eagles of Death Metal and the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures. Moreover, Homme has produced albums for artists such as Iggy Pop and Arctic Monkeys, and is celebrated for his avant-garde approach to music.

Last summer, Queens of the Stone Age dropped their eighth studio album, titled “In Times New Roman,” which they had been working on for six years. This record came after a tumultuous period in the band’s history during which frontman Josh Homme lost some dear friends. These included Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters, Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees, and actor and bar owner Rio Hackford.

Homme found himself entangled in a heated custody dispute with his ex-wife, Brody Dalle, concerning their three children. This contentious situation involved restraining orders. They had divorced in 2019 following approximately fifteen years of marriage amid accusations of alcoholism, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Later, just before the scheduled June 2023 release of the QOTSA album, Homme was diagnosed with cancer.
