Queen drummer Roger Taylor says Freddie Mercury sang like a ‘manic goat’ as he reveals how ‘dreadful’ the frontman sounded
As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for music history and a deep appreciation for timeless talent, I find myself captivated by the candid reminiscences of Roger Taylor, drummer extraordinaire of the legendary band Queen. The insights into Freddie Mercury’s early days, when his vocal prowess was likened to that of a ‘manic goat,’ offer an intriguing perspective on the journey of one of rock music’s most iconic figures.
Roger Taylor admitted his Queen bandmate Freddie Mercury sang like a ‘manic goat’ as he revealed how ‘dreadful’ the frontman sounded.
As a devoted admirer looking back, I recall how the elderly drummer shared an unsettling tale from the band’s early days. He recounted that the late singer, in his youthful exuberance, once startled his mother beyond belief.
Roger mentioned gratefully that Freddie was simply marvelous, yet the unique vibrato for which he’s famous required a bit of adjustment.
At the unveiling of their remastered first album, Queen 1, he shared with The Sun’s Bizarre section: “I believe you underestimated his previous sound; it was truly awful.
‘I mean, he sounded like some manic goat. He sounded extraordinary, his vibrato. My mother’s face when she saw him…’

Roger commented: “Freddie turned out to be an extraordinary individual that we won’t easily forget. He grew into an immense presence, capable of touching even the furthest corners of any concert or Argentinean stadium.
Even though Queen disbanded following Freddie Mercury’s passing in 1991, Roger Taylor and Brian May have persisted in performing under the band’s name, with Adam Lambert serving as the lead vocalist.
At London’s Hamyard Hotel, a unique gathering was held to commemorate the unveiling of Queen’s famous first album, now remixed, remastered, and expanded in a special edition.
Matt Everitt oversaw an event featuring a question-and-answer session with Brian May and Roger Taylor, concluding with a playback of their album.
Heading out afterwards Roger did the Can-Can in Soho with his daughters Tigerlily, Rory and Lola.
On Friday, it was revealed on Instagram that the family had an exciting evening out in London, where Tigerlily, aged 30, posted a video of the moment they spontaneously decided to dance their way down the streets.
She elegantly displayed her lengthy legs by lifting them up high, while Roger too put forth a vigorous effort.
Rory, 38, struggled to keep up, while Lola, 24, giggled in the short clip.

Tigerlily titled her post: “Dance dance dance… Big Dork Energy (BDE), clowning around SoHo with these oddballs last night.
She added about her sister Rory: ‘I can’t. The lack of coordination and look of confusion’.
Tigerlily, born from the union of Roger and his former spouse Debbie, was part of a relationship that lasted for fifteen years until they separated in 2004.
In addition, their former spouses are parents to daughter Lola and son Rufus, aged 33, who performs as a touring drummer for the live shows of Queen + Adam Lambert.
Apart from being known as Roger, this individual is also the devoted dad to two remarkable individuals – 44-year-old son Felix and daughter Rory, a general practitioner, whom he co-parents with Dominique Beyrand.
