Released in 2009, the film Push came between Chris Evans’ appearances as the Human Torch in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and his debut as Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger. Because of this timing, it’s no surprise that Push has largely been overlooked.
Based on the trailer (available below), Push really feels like a product of 2009. From the moody techno soundtrack to its unique visual style, it strongly evokes that time period. If you enjoy the look and feel of that era, you might like this movie.
If you enjoy superhero stories that are a bit different – ones that don’t focus on typical costumes and grand rescues – you might like this film. The characters, including Evans’, have psychic abilities, but they’re more concerned with personal survival than saving the world.

The movie Push isn’t well remembered, which isn’t surprising considering it didn’t make a big impact when it came out. It received poor reviews, with only 23% positive ratings from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, who described it as visually interesting but confusing. Audiences weren’t much more impressed, giving it a 42% rating. The film earned $48.9 million in theaters, just a little over its $38 million production cost.

The movie Push centers around Nick Gant, played by Chris Evans, who has the ability to move things with his mind. After his father, a trained killer, is murdered, Nick seeks revenge against a secret government organization called Division, which experiments with psychic abilities and drugs. He travels to the Hong Kong underworld and gathers a team of other psychics who also want to bring down Division. Together, including a young psychic named Cassie (Dakota Fanning), they search for a missing girl and a stolen suitcase – both of which could help them succeed in their mission.
Chris Evans is continuing to appear in superhero films. Though he previously stated his time as Captain America was over after Avengers: Endgame, he recently returned to the role of Johnny Storm (from Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) in Deadpool & Wolverine. He’s scheduled to play the character again in a film coming out in December.
