‘Pulp Fiction’ Writer Roger Avary Says Investors Are “Throwing Money” At AI Filmmakers

Award-winning screenwriter Roger Avary faced difficulties getting funding for his films for many years. Everything changed when he started mentioning artificial intelligence – or AI – in his proposals.

On The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary discussed the challenges of getting films made through conventional methods. He explained that after finishing a script and securing a budget, it often feels impossible to move forward. Avary then revealed he started a tech company focused on creating AI-generated films, and suddenly, funding became readily available.

From Struggle to AI Success

Following his Academy Award, many expected Roger Avary to become a major force in Hollywood. He did write the screenplays for Rules of Attraction (which he also directed) and Beowulf, but he’s only directed a total of four films since his first, Killing Zoe, in 1993. Avary explains that his problem wasn’t a lack of creative ideas, but rather difficulty convincing people to fund his projects.

Launching an AI-powered film production company appears to have shifted things. The director explained he’s working with Massive Studios AI to create unique technology for filmmaking, and has founded a new company called General Cinema Dynamics to do so.

I recently heard filmmaker Avary talking with Rogan, and it was fascinating. He basically said slapping the label ‘AI’ on his projects instantly attracted investors. He’s now juggling three films in production! What really struck me was his point that getting these AI-driven movies off the ground was surprisingly easy, especially compared to the struggles he’s faced trying to make films the traditional way. It’s a real commentary on where the film industry’s head is at right now.

As the film industry focuses more on minimizing risk and maximizing growth, artificial intelligence might not be a creative breakthrough, but rather a sign of financial opportunity. It suggests ways to cut costs, offer fresh content, and fit into larger patterns of technology investment.

He has several exciting films in the works, including a Christmas movie coming to theaters this holiday season and a faith-based film planned for Easter. He’s also developing a large-scale romantic war story. His interest in AI appears as the entertainment industry debates the impact of automation and the rights of creative workers, a conversation that gained momentum during last year’s union talks about AI.

Industry Resistance

While some in Hollywood fear AI will replace human creativity, Avary sees it as a helpful tool, similar to other visual effects. Director Guillermo del Toro recently criticized AI, stating it takes the human touch out of filmmaking. Avary respects del Toro’s view, but believes AI is just another technology filmmakers can use, and he’s familiar with integrating new technologies into his work.

Despite the high cost of the special effects in Beowulf, Avary believes similar results are now possible with a much smaller budget. He’s optimistic about this development, saying it’s a really exciting time for independent films and the future of filmmaking.

The Investor Signal

In a conversation with Film Threat, Avary explained this further. He suggested that AI-powered filmmaking could be attractive to investors because it avoids the slow pace and caution of traditional studio development. AI offers fewer hurdles, lower initial expenses, and the possibility of quicker profits. “It’s not that people lack creative vision,” Avary noted. “There’s a huge number of people eager to share their stories visually, and now they have a way to do it.”

No matter how things are made, investors still mainly want to see the biggest possible profits. It’s not yet known if AI will change how stories are created, but even the possibility of it is already helping projects get noticed and funded in an industry that usually avoids risks – something that typical proposals weren’t able to do.
