Be warned: this article contains major spoilers for the new horror film, Psycho Killer! The movie has just been released, so proceed with caution if you haven’t seen it yet.
Known as the Satanic Slasher, the film Psycho Killer features WWE veteran James Preston Rogers as a traveling murderer. He leaves cryptic messages urging people to “Open the gates.” After the Slasher kills her husband and a fellow police officer, officer Jane Archer (Georgina Campbell) makes it her mission to stop him.
Throughout its 92 minutes, the film Psycho Killer gradually reveals the disturbing backstory of the killer, hinting at a difficult childhood, substance abuse, and mental health issues. The movie builds to a shocking climax where the killer’s ultimate goal is revealed: to destroy a power plant and open a gateway to Hell. His final victims desperately try to uncover who can help him achieve this terrifying plan.
The movie Psycho Killer ends with Jane shooting the killer before he can destroy the power plant, and he appears to die. But news reports then surface suggesting he might still be alive, and the film shows him being taken to a secret government facility. This hints that the government was involved in the killings all along and leaves the door open for more movies.
With the release of the new film, Liam Crowley from ScreenRant spoke with producer Roy Lee about Psycho Killer. Lee admitted they aimed to create a fresh, memorable horror villain, drawing potential comparisons to Michael Myers from Halloween. Surprisingly, screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (known for Se7en) developed an extensive backstory for the killer, but the team ultimately decided not to include it in the final cut.
As a huge cinema fan, I found it really interesting to hear Roy Lee talk about the character’s backstory. Apparently, they dropped hints about him potentially being the result of a military experiment – someone who escaped! It wasn’t fully explained in this film, but it was there if you looked closely. They were carefully considering how much of his origin to reveal, and Andy was even writing extra scenes to play with that idea, especially for the ending. It’s cool to know there’s more to discover about why he’s so tough!
When questioned about how the movie ends and what happens to the villain, Lee revealed that the team is definitely considering making a sequel, Psycho Killer 2. He compared it to other successful horror franchises, adding that they’ve already come up with a strong title and are excited to see what the director, Walker, does next.
That makes sense. ‘Psycho Killer’ is a strong title – you’d immediately recognize it as a series, just like ‘Friday the 13th.’ You could easily have ‘Psycho Killer 1,’ ‘Psycho Killer 2,’ and so on, allowing for sequels that explore the character’s backstory and future.
Psycho Killer Didn’t Endure Too Many Changes In Its 19-Year Journey
ScreenRant congratulated the filmmaker on the film, noting it had been in development for 19 years, with the first script written around 2007. They asked how much the script had changed by the time the filmmaker joined the project compared to the final version.
I was almost involved from the beginning. I wasn’t part of the project for about 16 years while it was being developed by others. I joined later, read a script I loved, and then helped get the movie made.
Okay, so there’s this really interesting part with a cult in the movie, and I’m dying to talk about it, but we should probably hold off on spoilers until after it’s out. What I’m really wondering is, does the villain actually have any sense of right and wrong? Is he completely evil, or is there something more to him?
Roy Lee believes the individual wouldn’t have acted against the cultists if he genuinely thought they shared his beliefs or were pursuing the same goals.
ScreenRant: Did James, your actor, who is the physical presence of the slasher, also do the voice?
Roy Lee: He did. Hopefully you’ll be seeing him again.
