Prue Leith Admits She’s ‘Pretty Close’ to Needing a Carer

In a candid statement, Prue Leith acknowledges that she doesn’t have many years left due to her advanced age, leaning on her cherished husband, John Playfair, for comfort.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share the news that our beloved Judge from The Great British Bake Off, at an impressive 85 years young, has confessed to not having quite the zest she once did and finds herself remarkably near to requiring assistance with her hectic schedule, possibly in the form of a carer.

Fortunately, it’s her cherished spouse, aged 77, whom she married in 2016, who is there to assist her. Prue expressed a desire to savor each moment she has left with him.

On The Travel Diaries, speaking with Holly Rubenstein, she mentioned: ‘Given that I’m 85, I have limited time left. My desire is to spend as many moments as possible with him.’

In summary, whether we’re shooting overseas or heading to New York next week, it’s for promoting the American Baking Show.

‘Later on, my agent explains that the woman can’t take the call right away because she is 85 and requires help with her groceries, implying that she essentially needs assistance similar to a caregiver.’

Speaking highly of John, she exclaimed, “It’s remarkable how selfless he is. He remains unaffected by the fact that my status is greater than his.

Whenever I present him to others, he simply states, “I’m the one who carries the handbag, I’m her driver.

Previously, Prue and John publicly discussed the beginning stages of their romantic journey during a heartwarming segment on the talk show “Loose Women”.

30 years prior to his passing in 2002, the chef admitted that she hastily left after her initial encounter with her first husband at a social gathering.

At a friend’s house, Prue was informed about a dinner party. Upon arrival, however, she found herself among four other guests – two men and two women. This made her feel rather out of place, as if she were the extra berry in a cluster of grapes.

As a diligent admirer, I found myself compelled to share an experience: Upon leaving my friend’s dinner gathering promptly, I hadn’t foreseen the chain of events that followed next.

On the next day, it was John who showed up at Prue’s doorstep, as he confessed that he had immediately realized she was the right person for him.

The pair were questioned about their first encounter by the group, and John humorously teased that they had matched on a dating platform, namely Tinder.

In her own words, Prue shared the true tale: “Actually, it was quite uneventful; we gathered at a friend’s place. On my way back from Yorkshire, she invited me to join a dinner party. So, I tagged along. There were four of us – two men and two women – enjoying champagne together.

It was clear that the situation was orchestrated, and his presence only confirmed it. The nature of it all was evident, yet I wished to depart. Then, unexpectedly, John showed up at my door the following day.

John warmly remarked, “I instantly knew she was the right one,” whereas Prue humorously retorted, “He’s only saying that because I paid him.

Apart from that, Prue mentioned that her husband often inspires her bold outfits: ‘Color is heavily impacted by you, we’ve been a duo for 12 years. I consult with John about my choices and he always advises me to hold back on larger earrings or more vibrant hues.’

“John encourages me to go beyond my limits, which is wonderful since many women at 50 feel they should only wear grey. I believe vibrant colors are essential.

When asked about their Valentine’s Day plans, John coyly said he ‘couldn’t tell them about it’.

Previously, Prue openly discussed the 13-year long relationship she was involved in with her deceased first spouse, Rayne Kruger.

In a surprising disclosure, it was made known that their lengthy marriage began when she became romantically involved with her mother’s dearest friend’s spouse.

Regarding her choice to openly discuss her personal life in her memoir, the TV personality expressed that she had no intention of being secretive or discreet about it. She further explained, ‘If there are aspects of your life that may not make you proud, but could intrigue readers, it’s important to confront and address them.’

On the White Wine Question Time podcast, Prue expressed to Kate Thornton: “I pondered, ‘Given that Rayne was such a crucial figure in my life, shouldn’t I share his entire tale?’ And so, I chose to do just that.

While Rayne was wedded to the late South African actress, Nan Munro – a close friend of Prue’s mother – they collaborated together.

‘I never asked him to leave his wife because I was very happy,’ she explained of their affair.

In a simpler, more conversational style, this passage could be rephrased as: ‘I had no responsibilities in life, but all the joy that comes from being loved. I wasn’t pushing for marriage, but we shared 13 years together in secret, and nobody ever suspected because we were always careful about who we showed our relationship to.’

However, the situation turned out to be less complicated since he was a close acquaintance, the head of my company, and had been incredibly supportive. Furthermore, our friendship was well-known to all.

In time, Rayne parted ways with his older spouse (she was 17 years his elder) and embarked on a new journey with Prue, starting a fresh life and family. Their offspring include a son named Danny and a daughter referred to as Li-Da.

Despite the affair, the couple managed to maintain a close friendship with Nan, whom they came to deeply respect. Prue often referred to her as an exceptional or remarkable woman.
