‘Proud of how far I’ve come’: Strictly dancer Amy Dowden shares a health update as she marks two weeks since her second mastectomy

Amy Dowden posted an update on Instagram Wednesday night, noting it had been two weeks since her second mastectomy.

In May 2023, a professional dancer received a breast cancer diagnosis. Her treatment involved a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and fertility preservation, and she faced a life-threatening battle with sepsis.

Amy recently underwent a second mastectomy and is keeping her fans updated on her recovery through social media.

The celebrity, known from the show ‘Strictly,’ posted a photo of themselves after surgery. They were wearing a supportive bra and brown plaid pants.

She shared how proud she is of her progress since her surgery, explaining that she’s now concentrating on and appreciating the everyday little things and accomplishments.

Amy shared a photo taken the day she left the hospital after surgery. She’s feeling proud of her recovery, as tomorrow will be two weeks since the operation.

I’m concentrating on small steps, and I’m noticing I’m moving better and able to accomplish more each day.

I’ve been focusing on self-care, taking things at my own pace, and acknowledging even the smallest accomplishments.

I’m so happy to say I’m finally feeling like myself again this week – a real breakthrough! And I wanted to share a little reminder: please, don’t forget to take a moment for self-check-in. It makes all the difference.

Amy shared an honest video on her Instagram Stories about getting better, saying she’s finally starting to feel like herself again.

I’m feeling much better, thank you! I started to recover over the weekend and finally feel like myself again. My energy is back, it doesn’t hurt as much, and the bruising is fading. I’m excited to start physiotherapy and regain more mobility.

Everyone heals differently, so it’s important to follow your doctor’s advice. I saw my doctor a week after surgery, and they removed my bandages. It was still quite swollen, but I checked it out and was pleased with the results. Now, I’m focusing on recovery and getting back to dancing when I feel up to it.

The dancer said she’s been shopping for new clothes because her favorite dresses are currently unwearable. She explained they either don’t feel good or show her bra straps.

She explained that she needs supportive bras and can’t wear flat shoes, making it difficult to put on sweaters, but ultimately, it’s not a big deal.

I have some beautiful dresses, but I can’t actually wear them because they’re either uncomfortable, show my bra straps, or restrict my movement, making it hard to get around. This gave me a good reason to go shopping!

Amy finished by letting her fans know she’s feeling great and is excited to see the Strictly Come Dancing performers in Blackpool this Saturday.

I’m doing great! I’ve made a huge improvement in my recovery, especially since the weekend, and I’ll be feeling even better in two weeks on Thursday.

You know, it feels amazing to finally be getting back to a more normal life! I’m taking it one day at a time and being kind to myself, but I’m really pushing forward. I’ve had a lot of people reaching out asking for my advice, and honestly, all I can do is share what’s worked for me – everyone’s journey is different, but hopefully, my experience can help others.

‘Thank you so much and I’m looking forward to Strictly Blackpool!’

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following Amy’s health journey, and I’m so happy to share that her recent second mastectomy surgery was successful! She shared the good news with her fans earlier this week, and it’s wonderful to see her doing well.

The star shared a photo from her hospital bed after surgery, letting fans know she was able to watch the finale of Celebrity Traitors.

While recovering in the hospital, surrounded by her husband Ben and family, she wrote a message saying she was grateful for all the kind messages and support she’d received. She apologized for not being able to respond to everyone right away, explaining she had just started checking her phone.

The surgery was successful, and I’ve been getting plenty of rest and recovery time. My husband and family have been taking great care of me, and my close friends have been bringing over treats and everything we need to keep our tradition of watching ‘The Traitors’ alive!

People quickly filled the comments section with messages of support for the star, including a message from fellow dancer Dianne Buswell who wished her a speedy recovery and time to rest.

Claudia Winkleman and Ashley James added a series of love hearts.

People sent messages of support, offering love and wishing for a quick and easy recovery.

In February 2024, Amy shared that doctors hadn’t found any signs of the disease in her body. However, she explained that it would take five years to be completely sure, and she would continue to receive treatment during that time.

On Monday, the dancer—the first contestant eliminated from this year’s Strictly Come Dancing with her partner Thomas Skinner—revealed she will undergo another mastectomy.

She wrote: ‘I’ve always been honest about my health and the treatment I get, so I want to be upfront: I’m not sharing news about a new cancer diagnosis.’

After talking with my doctors, we’ve decided I’ll have another mastectomy this week. They’re optimistic that my recovery will be smooth and uncomplicated.

Amy concluded: ‘Once I have healed I look forward to rejoining my Strictly family.

I’ll definitely miss being there in person, but I’ll be cheering everyone on from home! Thanks so much for all your support. With love, Amy.

Amy goes to the cancer center each month for a check-up and a shot as part of her treatment.

Last month, Amy shared how upset she was about being eliminated early from the show, feeling like she had disappointed others battling cancer. She and her dance partner, Thomas from ‘The Apprentice,’ were the first contestants voted off this season.

She expressed her disappointment at being eliminated from the competition, explaining that she was eager to represent cancer survivors and felt she had failed them. She shared these feelings at the Women of the Year Awards in London’s Royal Lancaster hotel.

I hoped Thomas would achieve great things, but I also admit I was motivated by wanting to help others facing cancer. My own battle with the disease involved several setbacks – I started, had to stop, rejoined, and ultimately finished, even though it was challenging.

In 2023, Amy received a breast cancer diagnosis, just months after marrying her husband, Benjamin Jones, who is also a dancer.

She received a clean bill of health early last year, but her first attempt at returning to Strictly Come Dancing was unfortunately brief. After six weeks of dancing with JLS singer JB Gill, she had to stop due to a foot injury.

She explained that she wanted to demonstrate what’s possible for people after surviving cancer.

I keep reminding myself that returning to Strictly and dancing again will prove to everyone that you can still live a full life even after being diagnosed with cancer.
