Proud Hewitt Parents Watch Son Cruz Dominate Australian Open: Is He the Next Tennis Legend?
Bec and Lleyton Hewitt have watched their teenage son follow in his famous father’s footsteps.
On Saturday at Melbourne Park, both the actress and the tennis champion attended the inaugural Australian Open match of their 16-year-old son, Cruz, from the sidelines.
In the initial round of the boys’ singles competition, Cruz triumphed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against MooBeen Kim.
Australian former world No. 1 Lleyton was absolutely beside himself as Cruz dominated the court.
43-year-old showed animated excitement from the audience as Cruz gleefully shouted upon his victory.
Meanwhile, Bec occasionally appeared anxious and other times beamed with joyful exuberance as she navigated the ups and downs of witnessing her son excel.
Cruz has been a rising star in the sport, walking in the path set for him by his legendary dad.
This week, I found myself vigilantly standing up for my teenage son, who became a target of internet trolls on social media.
It was rumored that Hewitt’s son received a wildcard for the Australian Open qualifiers mainly due to his well-known last name, which Hewitt addressed.
In my perspective as a lifestyle expert, I found myself knocked out early during the tournament when I faced off against the formidable former world No.16, Nikoloz Basilashvili. Despite succumbing to him in straight sets, I managed to earn appreciation for the spirited fight I put up throughout the match.
Among four Australians, he was given a wildcard entry to join Bernard Tomic (who’s had some falls from grace), Alex Bolt, and Jason Kubler in the qualifying round.
Some users on X became even more upset when they witnessed a young player competing against top-ranked players like Jannik Sinner, Nick Kyrgios, Carlos Alcaraz, and hometown favorite Alex de Minaur.
This young athlete, who’s rapidly gaining popularity, is presently placed at number 1264 globally and holds the position of 107th among juniors. However, experienced analysts view him as a promising talent worth keeping an eye on.
On Channel Nine, two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt stated that his son’s development on the court is a lengthy process.
I looked forward to seeing him perform. He faced a challenging opponent in Basilashvili, a past No.16 and an individual who made it to the finals at Indian Wells.
To have Cruz surrounded by athletes like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alex de Minaur is simply inspiring for his development. Witnessing their preparation methods provides a fantastic model for him to emulate.
Currently, he’s playing exceptionally, and watching him go up against some top-tier players ignites my enthusiasm. Remarkably, he holds his own against them on the field.
Or:
He’s really shining right now, and seeing him play alongside world-class athletes makes me thrilled. Impressively, he can match their skills in a game.
Additionally, renowned Australian tennis player Todd Woodbridge voiced his support for the rising star, disregarding claims of favoritism or nepotism that were circulating online.
On Tuesday, he shared that Cruz holds those positions due to being an exceptionally skilled, promising young athlete and one of our top players right here in Australia.
He should have all the chances he’s been given to be present, but some individuals, often online critics, might try to argue differently.
It seems like you’re handling a situation that shouldn’t fall on your shoulders. Let me make this clear – he truly earned his place.
After winning two championships in Sydney and one in Christchurch, New Zealand last year, Cruz is overflowing with self-assurance.
2023 found the Australian tennis ace signing up his son for training at the Rafael Nadal’s tennis institution based in Majorca, Spain.
Previously, the family relocated from Melbourne to Sydney and then to the Gold Coast to support young Hewitt’s athletic aspirations.
For quite a while, the teenager harbored dreams of excelling in tennis. In 2021, the Hewitt family decided to leave Melbourne and invested approximately $4 million in purchasing a luxurious mansion located in Burleigh Heads, on the Gold Coast.
According to Daily Mail Australia, the reason for the Gold Coast move was a strategic plan, known as the ‘Cruz Mission,’ which aimed to foster and grow the budding tennis career of their son, Cruz.
It is known that Cruz’s father Lleyton, who won Wimbledon, was attracted to the numerous expansive tennis facilities along the coast, which feature a combination of grass, clay, and hardcourt surfaces, as well as the multi-million dollar tennis academy, KDV, situated in Carrara, often referred to as a ‘champion factory’.
The cutting-edge facility, boasting twenty tennis courts, lodging options, fitness centers, a swimming pool, and a practice driving range, is set to function temporarily as Team Hewitt’s headquarters. As Cruz ascends in the global junior circuit, he will find this center instrumental to his progress.
Tennis experts believe Cruz is not only as talented as his renowned father, but potentially even more so at the same stage of their careers. This promising player is undeniably on track to become a true tennis superstar in the future.
A local tennis expert remarked, “Moving to the Gold Coast indicates that the Hewitts are increasingly committed to Cruz’s growing likelihood of becoming a top-ten global tennis player in the future.
Lleyton and Bec were married in 2005 and also have two daughters, Mia, 19, Ava, 14.
