Props and costumes from Friends are being auctioned off to mark its 30th anniversary – including the iconic orange couch and Chandler Bing’s green sweater worn by late star Matthew Perry
As I delve into the tragic yet captivating lives of these two brilliant actors, Matthew Perry and James Michael Tyler, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration tinged with sorrow. Their stories are a testament to the power of art and the fragility of humanity.
Props and costumes from Friends are being sold off in a special anniversary auction.
Items that are famous from the long-running sitcom, such as an orange couch (from the opening credits) and a sign from Central Perk cafe, will soon be available for purchase by enthusiasts of the show.
Additionally, notable details are the costumes donned by all five principal actors, plus the distinctive attire sported by special guests like Bruce Willis and Winona Ryder.

In addition to the original five characters’ costumes, those worn by the guest star, notably a white shirt once donned by Bruce Willis, will also be put up for sale.
In three episodes, the man famed for Die Hard took on the role of Ross’s older father, whose young girlfriend had a brief romance with Rachel, another character in the series.
A hot pink dress and matching suede coat worn by Winona Ryder will also be on sale.
In the seventh season, Winona portrayed Melissa Warburton, a sorority sister of Rachel, who developed feelings for her following a passionate kiss during a college party where alcohol was involved.
One of Paul Rudd’s shirt will also featured in the auction.
Next month’s auction might see the classic light-blue Penguin polo shirt, usually priced at about $35, fetch a price over $500.
In the 24th episode of Season Nine, titled “The One in Barbados Part 2,” the actor portraying Ant Man wore the shirt. Here, he played Phoebe’s fiancé on screen.
A full outfit worn by Dokota Fanning is up for grabs.
The set consisting of wide-legged cargo pants and an off-center blue and cream striped sweater is up for grabs for fans nostalgic about Dakota as Mackenzie, the ten-year-old girl from the final season of the popular sitcom, who was moving out of the house that Chandler and Monica were interested in buying.
Other costumes and decorative items, apart from the main ones, will also be up for grabs during the online auction, scheduled for September 23. This event, organized by Julien’s Auctions, can be accessed both in Los Angeles and online.
David Goodman, the CEO of Julien’s Auctions, stated that every day, somewhere in the world, “Friends” is being shown on a screen. This indicates the immense popularity of the show and its ability to continue attracting new viewers even years after its final episode.
“Julien’s is overjoyed to present the renowned collection, produced by Warner Bros. Television, marking the 30th anniversary of a classic TV series that peaked in popularity and left an indelible mark on pop culture.”
The auction takes place, as the surviving Friends cast members express that commemorating the 30th anniversary carries a mix of sweetness and sadness.
Last year saw the sudden passing of Matthew, who resided in the affluent Pacific Palisades district of Los Angeles.
The cause of his death was determined as a drowning incident, triggered by the immediate impact of the drug ketamine, leading to a loss of consciousness while he was in his hot tub.
The actor struggled with alcohol and drug addiction throughout his life.
In 1997, a jet ski accident left him with persistent back issues, leading to an addiction to painkillers. His 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, details that he was consuming approximately 55 pills daily.
Despite numerous efforts to break free from drug addiction and frequent stays in rehabilitation centers, he consistently relapsed. In 2018, his colon ruptured as a result of substance abuse, which led to a two-week coma and the necessity of wearing a colostomy bag for several months.
In the course of his prolonged battle against drug addiction, Perry figures he’s visited rehab about 15 times, undergone detoxification approximately 65 times, and participated in around 6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
It’s said that the actor received multiple injections of ketamine in the months leading up to his death in October 2023, and five individuals were recently indicted for providing or administering the lethal dose of ketamine to the star known from Friends.
