‘Project Hail Mary’ Soars at the Box Office as ‘They Will Kill You’ free falls

The new movie, Project Hail Mary, had a fantastic debut last week and continued to perform strongly this weekend, earning another $54.5 million in the US and Canada. Worldwide, it’s now made over $300 million! Ticket sales only decreased slightly (by 32%), suggesting it will remain popular for weeks to come. Amazon MGM Studios invested $200 million in the film, and that bet seems to have paid off. Audiences are particularly enjoying Ryan Gosling’s performance as an astronaut who unexpectedly encounters alien life. With the movie’s success, author Andy Weir is likely free to pursue any creative project he chooses – and it probably won’t be related to Star Trek.

Following closely behind Project Hail Mary was Hoppers, which is proving to be more successful than any Pixar film released since Coco in 2017. The movie earned another $12.2 million, bringing its global total to nearly $300 million – practically ensuring it will be profitable after its $150 million production cost. Overall, animated family films are doing very well this year. GOAT, released almost two months ago, landed in eighth place this weekend, having grossed $180 million worldwide on a budget of around $80 million.

The new horror film They Will Kill You, starring Zazie Beetz, hasn’t had a strong start. Beetz plays a housekeeper who begins working in a high-rise building with a dark secret – people have been vanishing there. While Warner Bros. had success last year with horror films like Sinners, Weapons, and Final Destination Bloodlines, their recent release, The Bride!, performed poorly. They Will Kill You earned $9 million in its opening weekend, despite costing $20 million to make. Although it’s expected to perform better than The Bride! (which cost a whopping $80 million), the film’s initial numbers aren’t ideal.

Horror movies are doing well at the box office this weekend. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is currently sixth, earning $23.4 million globally. Undertone jumped to ninth place with $18.4 million, a great result considering it only cost $500,000 to make. New release Forbidden Fruits landed in tenth with $1.17 million. But the biggest horror success is Scream 7, which is seventh and has now made over $200 million, making it the most successful film in the Scream series.

I’m still seeing strong numbers for the Colleen Hoover adaptation, Reminders of Him, currently sitting at number six. It really highlights how much demand there is for romance stories with female leads. Considering it only cost $25 million to make, the film’s already earned nearly $70 million – a definite success! On a completely different note, the Bollywood action flick Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge continues to perform well, adding another $4.7 million to its global total, now reaching $89.7 million.

Distributors are generally seeing positive results, with ticket sales currently 23% higher than at this point last year, according to Variety. This trend is expected to continue with the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie this weekend. It’s possible that this year’s biggest hits will all be science fiction or space-themed films.
