‘Project Hail Mary’ Ending & Grace’s Fate, Explained

After a 12-year break from directing, Phil Lord and Chris Miller are back with Project Hail Mary, and it doesn’t disappoint. Their new film is a captivating and emotional space adventure, expanding on Andy Weir’s novel of the same name. The story follows Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), an astronaut who wakes up with memory loss on a spaceship, unaware of his mission to save Earth.

As Grace struggles to recall his purpose, he quickly understands the immense importance of his mission. He soon encounters another alien, a rocky creature he nicknames Rocky. The story beautifully unfolds as a tale of friendship and selflessness, because Project Hail Mary focuses just as much on the bond between Grace and Rocky as it does on their quest to save Earth from a strange, star-eating organism. Directed by Lord and Miller, with a script by Drew Goddard, the film is a surprisingly emotional and grand space adventure that culminates in an unexpected conclusion.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Is All About the Power of Friendship

Throughout Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary, the main source of suspense is that the protagonist, Ryland Grace, is on a mission with no expectation of returning home. He embarked on a one-way trip to investigate a strange phenomenon affecting a star in the Tau Ceti system, planning to send his findings back to Earth using small probes. However, Grace’s outlook changes dramatically when he meets Rocky. As they learn to communicate and understand each other, they develop a strong friendship, offering much-needed companionship. The story shifts from a bleak, desperate situation to one filled with optimism and hope.

The film reaches a particularly moving point when Rocky shares his fuel with Grace, delaying his return home by six years. Ryan Gosling delivers a heartfelt performance in this scene, highlighting the hopeful spirit that runs throughout Project Hail Mary, just like the book. While many space exploration films feature ultimate sacrifices for humanity, this one differs by focusing on problem-solving and collaboration, rather than dwelling on the darkness of the situation. It shares this optimistic tone with the original novel.

It’s fitting that the movie’s ending reinforces its hopeful messages, and takes them a step further. The way the planets are saved actually damages Rocky’s ship – an organism consumes all his fuel, leaving it unusable. Grace realizes the issue too late, leaving Rocky with a difficult choice: continue to Earth and save himself, or return Rocky home, send his research probes, and save both planets, knowing he’ll be stranded.

The Ending of ‘Project Hail Mary’ Features Two Unexpected Twists

The story of Project Hail Mary unfolds through flashbacks as the main character, Grace, slowly remembers his past. We eventually learn he was sent on the mission against his wishes, a surprising reveal that shows he wasn’t the fearless hero he initially seemed. Despite this, he ultimately regains control by choosing to use his remaining fuel to save his alien friend, Rocky, and return him home to Erid, ensuring the survival of both their planets. Thankfully, this isn’t a typical, sad ending where Grace is left alone in space. Instead, the film reinforces the importance of teamwork and connection, as Rocky’s species works together to keep Grace alive.

Grace and Rocky’s relationship, from the very beginning, was built on bridging their differences and understanding each other’s worlds, benefiting both of their species. The filmmakers wanted to create a heartwarming story about trust, showing how much Grace and Rocky relied on each other. Grace’s ultimate sacrifice is beautifully repaid when Rocky bravely risks everything to save her life, making the ending especially touching and providing a welcome sense of relief after the film’s intense moments.

At the end of the film, Grace is living on the planet Erid, inside a dome designed to replicate Earth’s atmosphere. He’s offered a chance to go back to Earth, but he decides to stay on Erid, where he’s now teaching a class of Eridian children – mirroring the flashbacks from the beginning of the movie. The film also shows that the probes successfully returned to Earth with a solution to save the sun, just when it was needed most, suggesting humanity will use Grace’s discoveries to avert disaster. Everything is resolved, leaving the audience with a hopeful and conclusive ending for everyone involved.
