Project Angel Food & Bonhams Host ‘ANGEL ART’ Auction for LA Wildfire Relief
The upcoming 22nd installment of Project Angel Food‘s annual charity art auction in collaboration with Bonhams, titled ANGEL ART 2025, will be held for the first time since 2019.
Project Angel Food and Bonhams are gearing up for their 22nd ANGEL ART charity auction in 2025, which is happening for the first time since 2019.
Or even simpler:
The 22nd edition of Project Angel Food’s ANGEL ART auction with Bonhams returns in 2025 after a two-year hiatus.
Back in 1993, I was part of an incredible event, serving as its Honorary Chair alongside the legendary artist David Hockney. Over the years, this event has been a game-changer, raising more than $11 million USD to support various causes. This year, our goal is even more significant – we aim to rally together and raise a staggering $400,000 USD to aid those affected by the heartbreaking fires in Los Angeles.
The organization I’m referring to has experienced a 10% surge in clients needing help. Many of these individuals are our senior citizens or those battling respiratory conditions made worse by the poor air quality. As a gamer, I feel it’s crucial we unite and lend our support to make a difference.
In the ANGEL ART 2025 event, artists who had lost their homes or were displaced due to fires are showcasing their work, symbolizing the strength and resilience within the artistic community. Additionally, Hypeart displayed a selection of pieces from an upcoming charity auction in their ‘THRESHOLD’ exhibition at Bonhams LA during Frieze Week in Los Angeles. This was done to expand the impact of the fundraising initiative.
Alexandra Grant, serving as Honorary Chair, underscored the significance of aiding Project Angel Food’s objectives by saying, “Every day, and particularly in times of crisis, what Project Angel Food does – caring for, nourishing, and feeding people – remains the same. Your contributions can extend our reach to more individuals who truly deserve our support within the PAF community over an extended period. In essence, food is a powerful expression of love!
Lilly Chan, the head of Bonhams US, expressed similar thoughts, emphasizing Bonhams’ dedication to helping Project Angel Food carry out its essential tasks. The upcoming auction will showcase pieces by artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Awol Erizku, Helen Frankenthaler, Jim Dine, Todd Gray and Richard Misrach, among others. It’s worth mentioning that Misrach’s work “10.31.98 5:05 PM” was given in tribute to his mother, Lucille, a long-term volunteer for Project Angel Food.
Bonhams has graciously decided not to charge any fees for the auction, meaning that all the earnings will be sent straight to Project Angel Food’s meal initiatives. As a gamer stepping into the role of an art auction organizer for the ANGEL ART event, I’d like to share how we curated the list of artists and artworks. Our selection process was guided by a dedicated committee consisting of influential figures in contemporary art and passionate supporters of Project Angel Food. This group reached out to artists, galleries, foundations, and collectors who have shown a commitment to our cause in the past.
The artists we approached were those who had previously supported Project Angel Food, and we leveraged our committee’s networks to spread the word about our mission and the historical bond between the arts community and Project Angel Food during the AIDS crisis. This helped us secure generous donations of artworks to fund our vital meal program, which is now more crucial than ever as we serve an increasing number of individuals affected by the devastating fires.
What effect are you anticipating this charity auction might bring about for the participating artists as well as the communities receiving aid through their relief projects?
In this extraordinary time for Los Angeles, it’s heartening to observe the art community coming together forcefully to aid in fire relief efforts. A long-standing and reliable charity, Project Angel Food, has been instrumental in providing assistance during city crises. Artists have been eager to donate their work, knowing that the funds generated would directly support some of our city’s most vulnerable residents. One particularly inspiring artist is Salomón Huerta, who sadly lost his home in the Eaton fire and will be present for and participating in the live auction.
As a grateful artist, I choose to shift my focus away from our past losses and instead, concentrate on our path toward recovery. The outpouring of support from the art community and my collectors has been nothing short of extraordinary. We are truly fortunate amidst the hardships faced by others. Project Angel Food is a beacon of hope for those who cannot help themselves. Since my studio was situated away from home, I have the privilege to contribute my work to Angel Art, a small token of gratitude in return for all the blessings bestowed upon me. I am immensely blessed, and the chance to give back through this project is an opportunity I cherish deeply.
With the tremendous backing of Bonhams, the committee, the media, and the art community collectively, we anticipate that Angel Art 2025 will successfully raise $400,000 USD for our fire relief fund. This donation not only provides immediate aid but also ensures long-term care for those affected by the fires’ aftermath. In rebuilding Los Angeles’ communities, we aim to be a constant presence in restoring the health and wellbeing of those impacted by the long-term effects of these fires. As Project Angel Food CEO, Richard Ayoub, states, “Project Angel Food stands ready before, during, and after a crisis.
Could you tell me about some standout pieces from the charity auction, and how they relate to our relief efforts or overall mission? The auction showcases works by esteemed artists like Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Awol Erizku, Helen Frankenthaler, Jim Dine, Todd Gray, and Richard Misrach. One noteworthy piece is Richard Misrach’s “10.31.98 5:05 PM” (1998/2019), valued between $15,000-$25,000 USD. This signed and numbered pigment print was donated by the artist in memory of his mother Lucille, a dedicated volunteer for Project Angel Food for over two decades. This piece beautifully captures the Golden Gate in a series exploring light and atmosphere, providing a dreamy perspective on a well-known view. Misrach’s participation underscores the strong ties between the arts community and our cause. We are equally excited to present a striking photograph of Betty White, a longtime donor to Project Angel Food, taken by renowned photographer Kwaku Alston. This photo is unique because it will also be displayed on an upcoming US Postage Stamp honoring Betty White that will be released next month.
The art pieces created by several artists who suffered losses in the fire, but nevertheless continued to contribute, highlight the strength and compassion found within the artistic community. Our artist support initiatives centered around the idea of transformation, a theme that struck a chord with many, resulting in the donation of over 70 works.
Discussing our partnership with Bonhams, it originated over a decade back when our kitchen was situated nearby on Sunset Boulevard before shifting to 922 Vine Street. One of our committee members revitalized this connection. Following a six-year break, we sought suitable locations for the reintroduction of Angel Art, and found ourselves reconnecting with Bonhams, a supporter of Project Angel Food in the early 2000s. The alliance was promptly rekindled, and Bonhams was among the first to provide substantial assistance following the fires.
Seeing such philanthropic efforts unfold is truly inspiring, showcasing the potential for positive change when individuals respond courageously to a crisis by uplifting people and their communities in times of hardship.”
Or, if you prefer a more informal tone:
“Witnessing this kind of philanthropy in action really gets you going! It shows what can be achieved when people step up during tough times to help others and strengthen their communities.
Each week, the Bonhams team participates in Zoom meetings, demonstrating their dedication and high standards. Remarkably, Bonhams isn’t charging anything for its online and in-person auction events, instead choosing to donate 100% of the earnings directly to Project Angel Food’s essential services. Let that sink in for a moment. The renowned global auction house, Bonhams, recognized globally as an elite player, is putting forth immense effort, offering their staff and resources, all while receiving only gratitude in return. This act of philanthropy serves as a powerful example of what can be achieved when individuals rise to the occasion to uplift people and communities during trying times.
