Production designer Dave Blass shares two of the best iconic moments he helped create
As a Star Trek fan who has lived through the voyages of the Enterprise and beyond, I can confidently say that the recent moments crafted by Emmy-nominated production designer Dave Blass have truly outshined even the brightest stars in the galaxy. The scenes on the new USS Enterprise and the reunion in the Roddenberry Archives were not just moments for us fans to enjoy, but also a testament to Blass’s lifelong dedication to the franchise.
Star Trek contains some of the most memorable scenes from both television and cinema. Examples include Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) joining forces with his friend, Admiral Picard [Patrick Stewart], in Star Trek: Picard, the emotional scene where Captain Kirk [William Shatner] is forced to abandon the woman he loves in The City on the Edge of Forever, and the heart-wrenching moment when Admiral Kirk discovers that the Klingons have killed his son David in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
The settings, the actors, the lighting, and the writing all come together to form these outstanding minutes that no Star Trek fan can ever (or wants to ever) forget. Most recently, we had two such scenes, one aboard the new USS Enterprise with Admiral Picard and the former crew of The Next Generation. It was a poignant stamp in time where everyone is back together on the ship that started their journey. The next scene just happened in Roddenberry Archives “Unification” short which reunited Shatner’s Kirk and Leonard Nimoy’s Spock for a final, silent goodbye, something we’d never gotten onscreen before.
David Blass, nominated for an Emmy, played a part in creating both significant scenes, expressing his joy at contributing to making these instances come alive.
Picture yourself, an ardent Star Trek devotee all your life, given the opportunity to contribute to crafting these cherished Star Trek moments for fellow enthusiasts who have walked this Star Trek journey with you.

Blass identified himself as a long-term admirer of Star Trek and invited fans to envision what it might feel like to actually create those memorable scenes. Frankly, it’s hard for most of us to truly grasp that sensation. The realization of a dream is frequently beyond words for outsiders. However, as enthusiasts, we appreciate the splendor these skilled creators present to us and eagerly anticipate more such moments in the future.
