The latest episode of Prodigal Son revealed the identity of the girl found in the box and her link to Eve Blanchard. Now that all two seasons of the popular crime thriller are available on Netflix in the U.S., viewers can follow the investigations of NYPD officer Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne). Despite dedicating his life to justice, Malcolm is the son of Martin Whitly, a notorious serial killer known as “The Surgeon.”
Throughout the first season, Malcolm is troubled by disturbing visions of a woman known as the “girl in the box” – a victim who appeared to have been murdered and left to decompose inside a small wooden container. This woman and the mystery surrounding her are central to the series, often overshadowing the crimes investigated in each episode. Initially, it’s even unclear if the “girl in the box” was a real person.
As the first season unfolds, it’s revealed that she is indeed real and shares a significant history with Malcolm’s girlfriend, Eve.
A Flashback Pulls Back the Girl in the Box Layers

The seventeenth episode of Prodigal Son‘s first season finally reveals more about the show’s long-running ‘girl in the box’ mystery, making the already dark story even more disturbing.
Malcolm had been plagued by disturbing nightmares featuring the mysterious girl in the box. These dreams continued for weeks, and he ultimately learned she was a real person with a link to his serial killer father.
Episode 15 included a flashback that showed Malcolm’s father, Martin, had met the girl who later died—a girl who bears a striking resemblance to Malcolm’s girlfriend, Eve.

Martin, a serial killer known as the Surgeon, saw a young woman injure her ankle while running in Central Park. Pretending to be a doctor, he offered her the use of his phone to call for help, and offered to examine her injury. She gratefully accepted his offer.
Martin surprised the woman in his house and knocked her unconscious. When his wife, Laura, came home sooner than expected, Martin had to change his plans. Instead of getting rid of the body as he usually would, he put her in a box.
Once Laura left, Martin was alone with young Malcolm when the person who’d attacked them came back. They went to check on the girl they’d left tied up, only to find she’d woken up and was now holding a knife, prepared to defend herself.
A young Malcolm is threatened with a knife, but Martin appears to intervene and kill the attacker—or so it seems.
Is Eve the Girl in the Box in Prodigal Son?

Episode 17 reveals that the girl locked in the box was Eve’s sister, Sophie Sanders.
About halfway through the show’s 17th episode, a surprising discovery is made. This happens after Malcolm’s mother and sister begin investigating the mysterious girl who has been troubling him for a long time.
The situation escalates when Malcolm’s mother and sister reveal a shocking truth at his apartment: the girl he’s been searching for is named Sophie Sanders and somehow linked to his father. They also drop another bombshell – Eve isn’t Malcolm’s biological sister, but was adopted as a child.

The girl’s family is actually the Sanders family, and the person inside the box is her older sister. Sophie arrives with Malcolm and confirms what everyone suspected: she pretended to be involved with the Whitlys to find out information about her sister, who disappeared over twenty years ago.
Even though this came out, Eve insists her feelings for Malcolm were genuine. However, she understands this news probably ends their relationship, as Malcolm has already been hurt by someone he trusted before.
Did Malcolm’s Dad Actually Kill the Girl in the Box?
In Episode 17, it’s revealed that Malcolm’s father, Martin, was responsible for Sophie’s death. While the episode initially suggests Martin still managed to kill her, even after she escaped from confinement, that’s not actually what happened.
Sophie actually lived, as Martin decided to let her go. A flashback in Season 1, Episode 18, reveals that he couldn’t bring himself to kill her after learning she was fleeing from another man when she injured her ankle.
Nicholas Endicott, played by Dermot Mulroney, is a major villain and used to be her boss. After listening to her explanation, Martin releases her, but she’s later killed by a hitman hired by Endicott—a powerful and secretive businessman—to keep her from revealing his secrets.
Fortunately, she confided in Martin, who was then able to share the details with his son, Malcolm, a New York City police officer. Together, they pursued Nicholas to ensure he faced consequences for his actions.
