Private Party should have won the AEW tag titles at WrestleDream
As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the rollercoaster of professional wrestling storylines, I must say, I was genuinely rooting for Private Party at AEW WrestleDream. Their underdog tale seemed primed to culminate in championship glory, and I was ready to cheer them on.
At AEW WrestleDream, fans anticipated that Private Party would emerge as the new AEW World Tag Team Champions. However, the outcome differed from expectations as The Young Bucks seized victory, retaining their championship belts. This surprising turn of events left many spectators taken aback, as this was supposed to be a significant moment for Private Party. Some feel that the creative decision to maintain the titles with the Bucks may not have been the best choice.
Initially, the narrative around Marq Quen and Isiah Kassidy’s ascension in the show was that they were perceived as lacking the caliber to be champions. The Jackson brothers, Matt and Nick, frequently disparaged them, implying their characters thought the duo were talented but not worthy of championship status. In essence, they were being dismissed as “above average” talent, much like Bryan Danielson during the “Yes” Movement.
All the stones were laid for the crowning achievement to go down that night. Quen and Kassidy get the victory, and the championships and infuse some excitement into a tag team division that has been devoid of such for a long time. But that didn’t happen. Some hot takes on social media stated that Private Party’s “story” is about them rising to the occasion and securing the championship. But that has been the case for five years now. Five years back they were the underdogs that defeated The Young Bucks in the tag team tournament. What success have they seen since that moment? Not much, if any.
In the world of professional wrestling and entertainment, building up to a major victory is just as important as the victory itself, since it forms the narrative. For instance, when “Hangman” Adam Page defeated Kenny Omega to clinch the AEW World Championship at WrestleDream, it was evident that this outcome had been planned all along. Every move was calculated, and the storyline reached its climax flawlessly. However, one might wonder why Private Party didn’t get their own significant moment during AEW WrestleDream. Regardless of when it happens, whether on an upcoming episode of AEW Dynamite or another PPV, their big win won’t have the same resonance as the buildup to WrestleDream because the anticipation and excitement generated beforehand plays a crucial role in shaping the overall impact.
AEW’s tag team championship could use more variety with The Young Bucks and FTR as the only top contenders. WrestleDream PPV offered a chance to introduce new champions and create excitement, but that didn’t happen when Private Party lost the title match. It would have been great if they had won the belts at the event, but unfortunately, that moment was missed. However, it’s likely that they’ll win the titles eventually.
