The Princess of Wales and singer Jessie J shared a touching hug, connecting over their experiences with cancer.
Prince William and Princess Catherine, both age 43, attended the annual Royal Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Wednesday night, alongside a number of famous performers.
After the performance, the royal couple met with the entertainers. Catherine, the Princess of Wales, had a particularly touching moment with the 37-year-old singer.
In January, The Princess of Wales shared that her cancer was in remission. Separately, Jessie had a mastectomy in June as part of her breast cancer treatment.
Jessie shared with her that she’d recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. She added that she just wanted to offer a hug, explaining that facing something like cancer really makes you appreciate life.
In a move that surprised royal watchers, Jessie touched Catherine’s shoulder and the two women shared a hug, discussing the shock of Catherine’s cancer diagnosis.

The singer performed her new song, “I’ll Never Know Why,” a tribute to her bodyguard, Dave, who tragically passed away in 2021.
Oh my gosh, when Catherine told Jessie that song was so moving, it just felt like she was speaking my soul! And then Jessie… Jessie just got it. She said it’s such an important conversation, and honestly, I felt like she was talking directly to me. She misses him so much, and she just wants to help everyone else going through something similar. It’s so beautiful and heartbreaking all at once, I can’t even!
Afterward, Jessie shared that she intentionally wore a black hoodie and sweatpants to portray someone experiencing depression while at home.
They prefer to stay comfortable and relaxed at home, not bothering with getting dressed up or putting on makeup. They’re happy lounging on the sofa in their comfortable clothes.
The singer shared that Prince William approached her with a proposal: to work together to promote open discussions about mental health and reduce the shame surrounding it.
I could tell he was really excited about collaborating with me. It sounds like the whole team believes in getting the word out, and they understand how crucial that is.

This performance was the sixth time William and Catherine have been to the show as a couple, and it was Princess Catherine’s first public appearance since she finished treatment for cancer.
Kate recently shared her experience with cancer, explaining that while it’s challenging to stay strong and positive during treatment, the recovery period afterwards can be surprisingly hard. She described trying to appear brave and stoic throughout her treatment, hoping to simply return to life as normal, but realizing the aftermath presents its own significant difficulties.
The Princess described her cancer diagnosis as a major life event and her journey through treatment and recovery as full of ups and downs. She emphasized the need to care for her overall well-being – mind, body, and spirit – throughout the process.
The Royal Variety Performance also marked a pivotal moment for Jessie.
The singer shared last month that her second cancer surgery had been delayed, even though she’d cancelled her tour to have it done.
Jessie recently shared the heartbreaking moment she ‘sobbed’ over her scars having a mastectomy.
Jessie recently told The Sunday Times’ Culture Magazine that she became emotional and cried when she first saw her surgical scars.
Doctors initially told the singer that because her cancer was detected early, she wouldn’t require radiation or chemotherapy. However, because the tumor was larger than expected, she had a mastectomy—removal of the entire breast—rather than a less extensive lumpectomy.
She recalled a recent emotional moment with her mother. Her mother was gently touching her chest, as she’s unable to touch the scar tissue herself. This caused her to break down, overwhelmed by what had happened. Her mother expressed how she wished she could take the pain instead, and they both ended up crying. She felt relieved that her mother wasn’t the one going through this.
As a dedicated follower of Jessie’s journey, it’s been so inspiring to see her strength. She shared that while getting the all-clear is a huge milestone, it’s not quite the finish line for her. She’s actually facing another surgery, this time to even out the symmetry with her other breast, and needs time to recover. She’s really focused on figuring out how to navigate the rest of the year with this in mind, and I’m sending her all my support.
Jessie said her beloved son Sky, two, has been the ‘light of her life’ during her cancer battle.
The royal couple made a rare public appearance in formal evening wear. Prince William had attended a similar event at Windsor Castle the night before on his own.
The Princess, steadily resuming public duties as she recovers from cancer, looked stunning in a green velvet gown. Prince William was equally handsome in his tuxedo.
Catherine looked stunning in a green dress, believed to be by the designer Talbot Runhof, and sparkling earrings. These beautiful earrings, made by Cartier over eleven years, were a favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth II and are known as the Greville chandelier earrings.
The Royal Variety Charity helps professionals working in the entertainment industry. In 2024, they created a special team to support those struggling with mental health, a cause that is particularly important to Prince William and Princess Catherine.
Jason Manford hosted this year’s show, which featured a special performance from Paddington The Musical. The musical began playing at the Savoy Theatre earlier this month.
Other highlights included a 40th-anniversary celebration of the stage show Les Misérables.
The prince and princess spent nearly 40 minutes talking to all of the acts who had performed.
The event featured a special appearance by Paddington Bear, who kicked off the show with a song from the latest musical created by Tom Fletcher.
William approached the famous bear, who was holding a marmalade sandwich, and asked, “May I shake your hand? That sandwich looks delicious.”
The bear, relying on the hidden actor to voice its thoughts, nodded as the prince exclaimed, ‘Your singing was absolutely amazing!’
Paddington politely greeted the couple with a tip of his hat. William noticed the sandwich and commented that it looked delicious.
Downstairs at the event, Prince William spoke with Sir Stephen Fry, telling him that his whole family enjoyed watching the recent series of Celebrity Traitors on the BBC.
‘Good to see you out of your robes,’ the prince said. ‘We love it. All the children watched it.’
Catherine knelt down to pet Hurricane, a dog who performed on stage with his trainer, Adrian Stoica, and learned it was the dog’s last performance.
Christopher Biggins asked the princess if her children enjoy pantomimes, and was thrilled to hear they attend a local show in Windsor.
Su Pollard, the actress, complimented Catherine, saying, ‘I love your hair – it looks much lighter now!’
The princess replied: ‘It used to be brown but it’s gone light in the sunshine.’
