Princess Catherine's carol service gets last minute promo with new illustration

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed more royal dramas than levels in a Final Fantasy game, I must say that the carol service at Westminster Abbey was indeed a much-needed break for the Royal Family this year. The Princess of Wales’ emotional letter and Charlie Mackesy’s heartwarming illustration were the perfect prelude to the festive season.

At long last, it’s the weekend of December 6th! This signifies that Princess Catherine’s carol service held at Westminster Abbey has taken place!

Lately, I’ve been immersed in Tea and Banter, and if you’re here too, you might have noticed our engaging coverage of the Princess of Wales’ upcoming Christmas carol service. This event marked a significant milestone for Catherine, as it was one of her most prominent appearances since completing her preventative chemotherapy treatments and making her return to the public sphere as an active royal.

Previously, we shared about the heartfelt missive penned by the Princess, emphasizing love as the most valuable treasure. The brief essay touched upon the significance of family ties and maintaining an open-hearted attitude. Given the events Catherine has encountered this year, it’s not unexpected that she would express such a message prior to announcing her upcoming event.

This week, I reached out to a renowned artist for a quick favor – to lend their star power and promote our upcoming carol service on social media at the last minute!

A new illustration from a notable artist to create some last minute attention

On X (previously recognized as Twitter) and Instagram, the Prince and Princess of Wales recently posted a picture crafted by Charlie Mackesy. As stated on the artist’s official website, Mackesy is a renowned artist, illustrator, and bestselling author who currently collaborates with Oxford University Press.

In the scene captured in this image, I find myself among a diverse group, including adults, kids, and our beloved pet, making our way towards Westminster Abbey. There’s a subtle conversation between two individuals in the photo, where one wonders “What role did I play?” The other replies, “[You] were with me every step of the way, and that meant everything.

The text in the image seems appropriate, considering all that the Royal Family has experienced this year.

Last month, Prince William expressed that 2024 was the most challenging year he’s experienced thus far. He faced the double blow of both Princess Catherine being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment, as well as the diagnosis of his father, the Prince of Wales, with cancer. Previous reports indicated that these health issues were revealed just weeks apart. On top of this, William had a demanding schedule filled with global public appearances, leaving him with minimal personal time to manage his mental wellbeing and process all the sudden news he was receiving.

It’s likely that the carol service at Westminster Abbey provided an opportunity for everyone in the Royal Family to unwind and enjoy the festive atmosphere of the holiday season. In about two weeks, 2024 will draw to a close, and the royals will be faced with a flurry of public events, press obligations, and business commitments as they usher in 2025.
