Prince William admitted he’s finding it difficult to watch the play ‘Hamnet’ due to the personal challenges his family has faced recently, including his wife’s cancer diagnosis and his uncle’s arrest.
The Prince and Princess of Wales made a striking appearance at tonight’s EE BAFTA Film Awards, seemingly intent on moving past the recent challenges facing the Royal Family.
Prince William revealed he hadn’t seen the nominated film Hamnet yet, explaining he wanted to watch it when he was feeling more relaxed, suggesting the recent issues surrounding Prince Andrew were weighing on his mind.
Before the glamorous event at The Royal Festival Hall, he explained he wasn’t feeling calm enough to speak. He said he needed to be more relaxed and would postpone his speech.
Catherine, he explained, had seen a very moving film on Saturday night and cried a lot.
Hamnet is a novel about the heartbreaking loss of Shakespeare’s young son and the profound sorrow it caused his parents.
The princess playfully admitted she initially thought watching the movie before the ceremony wasn’t a great idea. ‘I ended up with really puffy eyes!’ she laughed. She quickly added that it was a beautifully filmed movie with a fantastic score and music.
The Princess looked beautiful in a long, pink Gucci gown she’d worn before, to a 2019 event for 100 Women in Finance. Her hair was long, curly, and flowed freely.
William’s dark red velvet tuxedo jacket coordinated with his wife’s velvet belt and handbag.
The Princess praised the film by Chloe Zhao for its moving portrayal of grief experienced across different generations.
She added: ‘We have a long list of films that we still need to get through.’
The couple were making their first joint appearance since Andrew’s dramatic arrest last week.
William mentioned he hadn’t watched ‘Marty Supreme’ with Timothée Chalamet yet, and thought the vampire film ‘Sinners’ was ‘a little dark’.
I really enjoyed ‘One Battle After Another.’ The beginning took us by surprise, but it was excellent overall, he stated.
The Princess shared that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are all becoming more interested in watching movies.
Emily Stillman, who leads Bafta’s Film Committee, reminded her, ‘I remember when you were pregnant with George and practicing your lines for Harry Potter!’
She was talking about the time Prince William and Kate visited the Warner Brothers studios in Hertfordshire back in 2013. Prince Harry joined them for a tour of the Harry Potter set.
‘I was saying how much the children would love to look around,’ she replied.
‘They love the idea of going behind the scenes and finding out how it all happens.’
She also complimented the studios for highlighting the wide range of jobs available in the film industry.
The Prince and Princess arrived at London’s Royal Festival Hall and walked the red carpet, where they were greeted by Sir Kenneth Olisa, the Lord Lieutenant of Greater London.
They met with the all-female leadership team from BAFTA, including CEO Jane Millichip, Chair Sara Putt, Film Committee Chair Emily Stillman, and Executive Director of Awards and Content, Emma Baehr, for a friendly discussion.
During a conversation with Southbank Centre CEO Elaine Bedell and BT Group CEO Allison Kirkby, Catherine praised the young actors in ‘Hamnet,’ simply stating, ‘They were fantastic.’
She continued, explaining that she appreciated the film’s connection to nature, noting its simplicity and honest portrayal of human feelings.
She mentioned her own kids are now getting into movies, and she feels it’s a good way to talk to them about difficult topics.
Since 2010, The Prince has led the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and both he and The Princess have often been seen at their celebrated awards show. However, The Princess hasn’t been able to attend for the last two years as she’s been recovering from cancer.
Alan Cumming hosted the ceremony, which included performances by KPop Demon Hunters and Jessie Ware. Ware’s performance was particularly moving during a tribute to those who had passed away, and the couple enjoyed the show from front-row seats.
The audience chuckled when Cumming introduced Erin Doherty, noting her unique range: she’s played both a formidable gang leader and a frightened psychologist, and not many actors can say that about Princess Anne!
My apologies! It should read, ‘terrifying gang leader, Princess Anne, and a terrified psychologist.’
This public outreach is happening at a difficult moment for the Royal Family, as people are increasingly asking King Charles to share what he knew about the accusations against Prince Andrew before his arrest.
The King released a surprising statement offering his full support and cooperation with the investigation involving Prince Andrew, just hours after Andrew was taken into custody on Thursday. Sources say Buckingham Palace was unaware that the Prince would be arrested.
The King has expressed deep concern after learning about allegations of misconduct in public office involving Prince Andrew.
Here’s how this issue will be investigated: it will follow a complete and fair process, handled by the right people and authorities. As I’ve stated previously, they have our complete support and we will fully cooperate with their work.
‘Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.’
William and Kate are understood to support the King’s statement.
King Charles has stated he will fully cooperate with any police investigations concerning his brother, providing access to all relevant documents and information.
Police made the arrest after investigating claims that Andrew shared secret business information and investment possibilities with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, in 2010 and 2011. At the time, Andrew was the UK’s trade representative for Asia.
After being arrested, Andrew was interrogated for eleven consecutive hours. He was later photographed looking exhausted in his Range Rover as he left the Aylsham Police Investigation Centre.
After being asked to move out of his home at Royal Lodge by King Charles earlier this month, he was relocated to Wood Farm, a property on the royal Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m following the news closely, and it’s being reported that authorities recently searched Wood Farm. Now, they’re extending that investigation to include a thorough search of the Royal Lodge, the seven-bedroom mansion. It’s all part of an ongoing inquiry, and we’re learning more as it unfolds.
Okay, so I’ve been following this obsessively, and apparently the police aren’t just looking at the main thing anymore! They’ve basically said if they stumble across anything else suspicious while going through everything the former prince owned – his files, his stuff, everything – they’re going to investigate it. They said they’ll ‘follow the evidence’ wherever it leads, and honestly? That just means this whole thing could get so much bigger. I’m glued to updates, it’s insane!
