Prince Archie and Princess Lillibet change their surname in a break with tradition
As a long-time follower of the British royal family and avid gamer, I find this latest development quite intriguing. The announcement that Prince Archie and Princess Lillibet will no longer bear the Mountbatten-Windsor surname comes as a surprise, breaking with a long-standing tradition.
As someone who has closely followed the British royal family for years, I find it intriguing that Prince Archie and Princess Lillibet are set to abandon the Mountbatten-Windsor surname. This decision marks a significant departure from the tradition established in 1960, which designated that the queen’s descendants would carry on this surname.
What’s in the name?
A new website, www.sussex.com, for Prince Harry and Meghan was introduced this year. This site serves as their primary online presence, featuring their Archewell Foundation and Archewell Productions. Notably, it is now referred to as “The Office of Prince Harry & Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” following Queen Elizabeth II’s bestowal of the Sussex dukedom upon Harry before his 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle. (This title had been dormant since 1843.)
Archie and Lillibet have decided to adopt the last name of Sussex moving forward. This unconventional choice aligns with their personalities, as they’ve distanced themselves from their roles as working royals and strive for financial independence in California.
The article goes on to quote a remark made to The Times regarding the choice:
The reality behind the new site is very simple – it’s a hub for the work the Sussexes do and it reflects the fact the family have, since the King’s coronation, the same surname for the first time. That’s a big deal for any family. It represents their unification and it’s a proud moment.
In March 2023, the children, who weren’t initially titled as royals due to not being direct descendants of the monarch, were granted the titles of Prince and Princess respectively following the queen’s demise. According to The Royal.UK website, Archie ranks seventh, while Lillibet takes the eighth position in the line of succession for the throne.
