Harry Bosch, the famously grumpy detective from television, is incredibly popular. Following the success of two series and a spin-off, a new show is coming that will reveal how he first became the detective we know.
MGM+ and Prime Video have approved a new series, *Bosch: Start of Watch*, which will follow detective Harry Bosch as he begins his career with the LAPD. Cameron Monaghan, known for his role in *Gotham*, will star as the young Bosch. Omari Hardwick will join the cast as veteran officer Eli Bridges, according to *Variety*.
Filming is expected to start in Los Angeles next year, but there’s no confirmed release date yet. The story will be set in 1991 and will portray a city struggling with racial tensions, gang violence, and problems within the Los Angeles Police Department.

Detective Harry Bosch is pulled into a major robbery and a widespread conspiracy of police corruption while handling his usual cases and facing increasing tension in the city. This case will challenge his dedication to justice and define him as a detective who believes everyone deserves equal consideration.
Inspired by Michael Connelly’s books, *Bosch: Start of Watch* was created by Brian Anthony and Tom Bernardo, with Bernardo also leading the show as showrunner. Both previously worked on *Bosch: Legacy* and are also producing this new prequel series.
MGM+ is excited to share the story of how Detective Harry Bosch became the iconic character fans know and love, offering a glimpse into his beginnings,” said Michael Wright, head of the streaming service.
Cameron and Omari powerfully portray the characters, and thanks to the creative direction of Michael and our skilled producers, *Bosch: Start of Watch* will continue the series’ tradition of realistic, compelling stories while also launching a fresh, engaging storyline.
Michael Wright and everyone at MGM+ have done an amazing job guiding the next phase of the Bosch story with real thoughtfulness and respect,” said Connelly, who is also a producer on the show.
It’s a real treat to finally see the origins of Harry Bosch, and I know his fans will feel the same way after enjoying ten seasons with him. I’m excited to work with Cameron and the writing team to delve into a new side of his character.
Start of Watch is the fourth installment in this series, coming after Bosch, Bosch: Legacy, and the spin-off Ballard. Ballard featured Maggie Q as a LAPD detective leading a team that investigates old, unsolved cases.
Bosch: Start of Watch does not yet have a release date.
