Prime Video has become a haven for science fiction fans, even breathing new life into a previously fading sub-genre. Shows like The Expanse, often hailed as a top modern sci-fi series with a focus on realistic science, Tales From the Loop – similar in style to Love, Death + Robots – and the compelling adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle are all worth watching. However, one exceptional sci-fi series quietly stands out, successfully reviving a sub-genre that was nearly lost.
I’ve always loved post-apocalyptic sci-fi, but it feels like it rarely gets the attention it deserves. We get a few standouts now and then – things like Mad Max: Fury Road, or seriously great movies like The Book of Eli and The Road that don’t get nearly enough love. But Prime Video’s Fallout series feels different. It’s brought all that – the ruined worlds, the strange groups of survivors, and the story of how everything fell apart – to a whole new audience. It’s kind of like what Game of Thrones did for fantasy – suddenly everyone was talking about it! Now, phrases like ‘nuclear fallout,’ ‘power armor,’ and even ‘ghouls’ are becoming everyday terms, and I even find myself saying ‘okey-dokey’! It’s awesome.
The popular new TV series is based on the well-known Fallout video game franchise, originally created by Black Isle Studios and now developed by Bethesda Softworks. The games – and now the show – are set in a future, 250 years from now, where the world has been devastated by wars over resources. These conflicts happened between the United States and Communist nations, leaving behind a dangerous, radioactive landscape. Each story follows a different survivor, and the Prime Video series Fallout continues that tradition. The show stars Ella Purnell as Lucy, a woman who leaves the safety of an underground vault to search for her father. Along the way, she teams up with a tough mercenary called The Ghoul (played by Walton Goggins) and Maximus, a newcomer to a powerful and technologically advanced group known as the Brotherhood of Steel.
‘Fallout’ Made the Post-Apocalypse Mainstream
We understand you’re pointing out that The Last of Us was also incredibly popular. You’re right, but that show leans more specifically into the zombie genre, whereas Fallout falls into the wider category of post-apocalyptic stories. Regardless, Fallout has quickly become a massive hit for Prime Video, performing as well as shows like The Boys and Reacher.
Following his role in Fallout, Dave Bautista will star in the 2025 post-apocalyptic film Afterburn (leaving aside Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead). He’s not the only big name joining this trend, as Ridley Scott is also directing an upcoming irradiated story called The Dog Star.
‘Fallout’ Could Last for a Long Time on Prime Video

Prime Video
As a huge cinema fan, I have to say Fallout is something special. It’s rare to see a show build on an existing world – in this case, the Fallout games – and actually deliver a fresh, compelling story. What’s brilliant is it works for both longtime fans and newcomers. But the really exciting part? The possibilities for where the show could go next are endless! If the writers keep up the fantastic quality we’ve seen so far, they could take us absolutely anywhere. We already got a glimpse of the beloved New Vegas in Season 2, and I’m already dreaming about what they’ll do in future seasons. They could explore more locations from the games, or even better, venture into completely new parts of post-apocalyptic America. It’s genuinely thrilling to think about!
