Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ Casts ‘Lost’ Star Sonya Walger as Freya

The upcoming God of War series on Amazon is highly anticipated, following a recent trend of successful video game adaptations for film and television. Prime Video already saw success with its Fallout adaptation, renewing it for two seasons. While online reactions to the God of War series are mixed between excitement and skepticism, the production team has now cast a key actor for the show.

According to Variety, Sonya Walger, famous for her role in Lost, will play Freya in the upcoming television series. She joins Ryan Hurst (Kratos) and Callum Vinson (Atreus) in the cast. Considering Freya’s importance in the original video game, Walger is likely to have a significant role throughout the first season, which is currently being filmed and is expected to be released around 2027. Other cast members include Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

The official description for the character of Freya is as follows:

Freya is a powerful goddess and princess from the Vanir, skilled in ancient magic. She was once married to Odin and the Queen of Asgard’s Valkyries, receiving the title on her wedding day. Though strong and perceptive, she carries deep regrets. After a difficult marriage to Odin ended in exile, Freya was separated from her family and homeland, Vanaheim. For the past century, she’s lived a solitary life in hiding on Midgard, feared by humans and known as the Witch of the Woods.

The God of War series, developed by Santa Monica Studio, expertly blends Greek and Norse mythology into intense and violent narratives. Kratos’s pursuit of vengeance often leads to clashes with the gods themselves. The newer installments, released in 2018 and 2022, take a more thoughtful and introspective approach, as Kratos attempts to escape his history of violence while navigating the conflicts of the Norse world.

The casting of Walger as Freya is a great addition to the series. She’ll be playing a complex character – a powerful goddess with a troubled history who finds peace in nature and is fiercely protective of her children. The first season will likely cover most of the story from the first game, largely due to the young age of the actor playing Atreus, though it’s unclear exactly how much of the two games will be adapted. Walger’s casting is particularly exciting because Freya has a very important and emotionally charged relationship with both Kratos and Atreus, and a talented actor is crucial to making those scenes truly impactful.
