When The Wheel of Time first appeared on Prime Video in 2021, it didn’t quite live up to the high hopes surrounding it. Fortunately, Prime Video’s new, three-part fantasy series seems capable of addressing the issues that held the first series back. Based on Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy novels, The Wheel of Time was initially intended to be Prime Video’s version of Game of Thrones.
Early reviews revealed several issues with the show, and as a result, viewership for The Wheel of Time dropped. Amazon decided to cancel it after three seasons, meaning the fantasy series wouldn’t get the ending fans hoped for. Fortunately, The Legend of Vox Machina has fared better and continues to be renewed.
The Legend Of Vox Machina Will Have A Better Fate Than The Wheel Of Time
The Legend Of Vox Machina Has Had Better Reviews Than The Wheel Of Time
Despite being one of Prime Video’s most popular shows, The Wheel of Time was cancelled after its first season. While many people watched it, critics and fans generally didn’t love the series, finding it to be a weak adaptation of the original books. Key elements of the story and characters were altered, and the show’s visual effects were often criticized, all contributing to its negative reception.
It’s impressive that The Wheel of Time lasted for three seasons, considering how many fantasy TV shows don’t even get renewed after one. Luckily, Prime Video also has The Legend of Vox Machina, which is another excellent fantasy series. Based on the Critical Role video game, it currently has three seasons, with two more already planned.
While The Wheel of Time didn’t fully stick the landing, The Legend of Vox Machina has a chance to end its story on a high note with its upcoming fifth season. The fantasy series has been well-received, and its quality consistently improved over time. Currently, it boasts a perfect 100% score from critics and a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a fantastic accomplishment.
The popularity of Vox Machina led to another successful series from Critical Role, The Mighty Nein. The video game series based on these characters has quickly become one of Prime Video’s most successful fantasy projects.
How Legend Of Vox Machina Succeeded Where The Wheel Of Time Failed
The Legend Of Machina Is A Cohesive Fantasy Show
Honestly, the Wheel of Time books aren’t top-tier fantasy, and the TV series reflected that. While the show improved as it went on, the first season was noticeably weak and hard to overlook. The biggest problem with The Wheel of Time is a lack of a clear creative vision.
The show’s story felt disjointed, struggling to blend established background details with new plotlines. In contrast, The Legend of Vox Machina had a clear vision from the start. Each episode of the adaptation stays focused and consistently develops its story and characters.
The Wheel of Time struggled to adapt its enormous scope. With 15 books in the series, it was hard to decide what to include. In contrast, Vox Machina stayed true to its strengths. By focusing on its characters, atmosphere, and exciting action, it created a streamlined show that accomplished a lot without feeling cluttered.
Bringing fantasy stories to life in live-action TV is often a big challenge, as seen with The Wheel of Time. Other fantasy shows suggest that animation might be a better fit for the genre, especially when complex worlds and rules are involved. The Legend of Vox Machina, being animated, successfully created its world in a way that The Wheel of Time didn’t.
