Two popular thriller series, starring Jensen Ackles and Daniel Dae Kim, have been canceled by the streaming service after only one season. Both shows were considered among the best thrillers in recent years.
Prime Video has decided not to renew either *Countdown* or *Butterfly* for a second season, according to reports. *Countdown*, starring Jensen Ackles (known for *Supernatural* and *The Boys*), launched in June 2025, and *Butterfly*, featuring Kim (famous for his role in *Lost*), premiered in August. Both series were produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
Countdown is a 13-episode series starring Jared Ackles as Mark Meachum, a Los Angeles police detective brought onto a secret team to investigate a murder within the Department of Homeland Security. Butterfly featured Kim as David Jung, a former intelligence officer living in South Korea, but the show was canceled after only six episodes when his past began to haunt him.
The decision to cancel these shows is unexpected, especially *Countdown*, which has remained popular on Prime Video even after its first season ended. It’s currently tenth on the platform’s top 10 list. Both *Countdown* and *Butterfly* also performed well in Nielsen’s rankings of streaming shows: *Countdown* reached number 8 with its weekly episodes, and *Butterfly* hit number 6 after releasing all episodes at once. These cancellations follow the recent cancellation of another Prime Video show, *Motorhead*.
Countdown Season 1 Ended on a Cliffhanger
The cancellation of the thriller series *Countown* is disappointing for its fans. Just last month, Jared Ackles expressed optimism about a second season. The first season ended with a flash forward in time and a new case focusing on the President and the governor of California. Ackles felt the decision to wrap up the initial storyline with three episodes left was clever, allowing creator Derek Haas to set up a larger case for the future and end the season on a cliffhanger. He hoped the show’s finale was designed to lead into Season 2 and that positive feedback from viewers and critics would convince Amazon to renew the series and continue the story.
Kim discussed his experience taking the lead on a new series after his long run on *Lost*. He explained that with *Butterfly*, the focus was on telling the story as effectively as possible. While the show had original elements, it also drew inspiration from other action and adventure series. The creators often referenced existing shows and movies, noting what worked well – like specific fight choreography – and what they wanted to avoid, carefully shaping *Butterfly* in response to what had come before.
Countdown and Butterfly are streaming on Prime Video.
