Primate Ending Explained: What Happens To Ben And Who Survives His Rampage

Be warned – this review contains spoilers for the movie Primate. Primate is a very violent horror film where many characters don’t make it through the night. The story centers around a group of friends at a secluded house in Hawaii, and things take a dark turn when the family’s chimpanzee becomes dangerously wild. The film is relentlessly brutal from the very beginning, showing graphic violence throughout.

Beyond the intense action and frightening scenes, the film explores a powerful message about the strength of unity. Primate highlights how people working together offers the best hope when facing overwhelming dangers, even amidst loss and fear. It really emphasizes the importance of community in overcoming major threats.

Why Ben Goes Feral In Primate?

Ben’s sudden, violent outburst is caused by a rabies infection, which explains why the usually gentle ape starts destroying things. The movie Primate introduces Ben as a cheerful and well-adjusted member of the family. He was adopted as a chimpanzee as part of a language study conducted by Lucy and Erin’s late mother.

Ben was bitten by a mongoose that had rabies during a fight, though he managed to kill the mongoose. Sadly, the bite infected him with the disease, and his family didn’t realize it in time. As a result, Ben lost control to his anger and succumbed to the infection.

This raises a key question in the film: rabies is rare in Hawaii, yet an infected mongoose managed to arrive and roam freely. This implies that other animals could also be infected, potentially spreading the disease further.

Primate Kills Most Of The Cast In Pretty Brutal Fashion

The movie Primate is incredibly violent, and most of the characters don’t survive. Out of nine main human characters, only three are still alive at the end. The film immediately sets a dark and gruesome mood, starting with a shockingly graphic scene involving the local veterinarian.

When Ben bites Erin, the teenagers – Lucy, Hannah, Kate, and Nick – manage to escape him temporarily by hiding in the pool. Although Ben can’t swim, he’s able to walk around the edge of the pool. This leads to Nick’s tragic death: he attempts to push Ben off a cliff, but Ben pulls him over instead.

It was awful watching Kate and Lucy try to get to a phone, only for Ben to find Kate and brutally attack her with a rock. And then, just when it seemed Hannah might actually escape, she accidentally got into the wrong car… a car that ended up being completely destroyed. The worst part is, the car belonged to Drew and Brad, who were just looking for the girls, but Ben killed them both instead. It was a truly horrific series of events.

Ultimately, Lucy, Erin, and their father, Adam, are the only characters who make it through the movie. Despite being seriously hurt, they manage to team up and injure Ben repeatedly until he’s vulnerable enough to be impaled by a broken chair near the pool.

Primate is a disturbing movie that doesn’t hold back on showing violent deaths, notably when a character named Drew has his jaw ripped off. This contributes to the film’s old-school horror vibe, making it feel like a classic slasher movie with inventive and brutal ways of killing off its teenage characters.

The True Meaning Of Primate

Primate is a disturbing movie that honestly portrays the frightening effects of Ben’s changes, while still focusing on the importance of family. The film centers around the difficult relationship between Lucy and her parents, Erin and Adam. Lucy has become somewhat estranged from them after going to college and making new friends.

Throughout the movie, the relationships between the characters are strained by Ben’s violent behavior. Lucy constantly tries to protect Erin from the now-dangerous Ben, putting herself in harm’s way to get Erin to safety. Erin then steps up at a critical moment, distracting Ben and saving Lucy’s life.

Both girls are also upset with their father, who has become increasingly absorbed in his writing. He’s so distant that he doesn’t return home until after the majority of the building’s residents have been killed. However, his return is important, because he’s then able to help keep his daughters safe.

The most heartbreaking part of Primate is how easily it tears people apart. The tension within Lucy’s family appears to have started after her mother’s death, which makes Ben’s decline even more tragic. Because of his transformation into a dangerous creature, all of Lucy’s research on him is now lost.

Hannah briefly thought she’d escaped, but mistakenly jumped into the wrong vehicle, which could doom her friends. She ended up alone and vulnerable when Ben found her. In contrast, the main family stuck together and managed to survive the ordeal.

What really struck me about this film is how it constantly pits people against the raw power of nature, and how every character has to face just how dangerous this creature is. Even Kate’s death feels connected to that theme – Lucy’s momentary lapse in attention leaves her vulnerable, highlighting that being alone is a death sentence in this world. It’s clear that those who band together in Primate are the ones who actually make it through.
