Previously-perfect returning show gets mixed reaction as viewers rush to watch new episodes
A highly rated show has returned to our screens, but the reception from fans has been mixed.
On Valentine’s Day, the third season of the chilling teen horror series called Yellowjackets made its debut, launching the initial two episodes out of a total of ten for this season.
In a new series that premiered in 2021 on Paramount+ and Showtime, we find ourselves tracking the journey of the Yellowjackets women’s soccer team. After their tragic plane crash in the wilderness during a trip for a national tournament, these young athletes must battle to survive.
The story of Yellowjackets is divided into two timelines: the past, showing how the teenage survivors succumbed to madness and resorted to cannibalism, and the present, in which the adults struggle with their haunting pasts while dealing with an immediate danger threatening their survival.
The initial season of the show was incredibly well-received by viewers, achieving a flawless 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, season two has garnered a commendable 94% rating.
However, season three, featuring the return of actors like Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, and Tawny Cypress (and more), is presently rated at 88%. This is the lowest score the series has achieved to date.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say, the latest episodes have been impressive with an astounding 88% score. However, some critics have pointed out that the storyline feels a bit uneven at times. Yet, the show’s exceptional performances and chilling horror aspects have truly left me in awe.
Here’s what some of the reviews have said:
The Guardian
Regardless of the fact that the plot seems improvised, it’s challenging not to be engrossed, given how delightful the experience is.
Rolling Stone
Although the series offers many strong performances and features several memorable songs from the ’90s, it might benefit from an extra boost. Perhaps something as impactful as when Jack said to Kate, “We have to go back!” could be introduced to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
IndieWire
Just like a sports team that suffers a devastating loss, the show created by Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson, and Jonathan Lisco has lost some of its initial momentum. This setback has left the characters adrift in a storytelling wasteland, hoping for a rescue that might never materialize.
The Hollywood Reporter
In its third iteration, the storyline continues to waver as it strives for a harmonious equilibrium. However, it remains captivating due to compelling character interactions and commendable acting that keeps viewers engaged.
Variety
The program continues to excel at portraying one of its most powerful aspects: revealing the raw emotions and perhaps the innate spirituality hidden in teenage girls through the lens of untouched wilderness.
Observer
As a fellow gaming enthusiast aboard the Yellowjackets train, I can confidently say that once you’re on this ride, it’s tough to jump off! The third season is stirring anticipation with hints of answers coming our way, but let’s not forget, it also looks like more intriguing questions will be thrown into the mix.
Dread Central
If you’re an ardent follower of “Yellowjackets”, take comfort – you’re going to love it even more. However, be prepared for instances that might make you jump out of your seat and yell at your screen in surprise.
Forbes
Instead of maintaining the eerie, intriguing air and relatable human qualities that originally captivated viewers, Yellowjackets has seemingly let go.
IGN Movies
In the third season of “Yellowjackets,” there seems to be a noticeable drop in excitement compared to the first. Despite the actors’ commendable performances in both timeframes, the storylines lack the exceptional quality that was established early on.
