Presumed Innocent Season 1 finale explained (what can season 2 be about?)
As a huge fan of legal dramas and Scott Turow’s “Presumed Innocent,” I was absolutely hooked by the first season of Apple TV+ adaptation. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat, and I was thoroughly impressed with Jake Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of Rusty Sabich.
The first season of “Presumed Innocent” on Apple TV+ has come to an end. Could there be an adaptation of additional Scott Turow novels in Season 2?
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for the Presumed Innocent Season 1 finale
Scott Turow’s career as a renowned novelist took off with the publication of “Presumed Innocent” in 1987. This novel was later brought to life on the silver screen in a successful 1990 film featuring Harrison Ford, while the recent adaptation for Apple TV+ introduced an unexpected twist in the climax.
In a surprising turn of events, Chicago prosecutor Rusty Sabich, portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, stands accused of murdering his lover and colleague Carolyn Polhemus with whom he was having an affair. The plot thickens as the trial unfolds with unexpected twists and turns. Eventually, the jury delivers a shocking verdict, acquitting Rusty of all charges.
At home, Rusty confessed to his wife Barbara (Ruth Negga) in a quiet conversation that he’d discovered Carolyn dead and presumed, erroneously, that Barbara was responsible. Barbara vehemently denied any involvement in the murder. Suddenly, their teenage daughter Jaden (Chase Infiniti), an original addition to the series, disclosed that she had killed Carolyn during a heated argument.
Rusty and Barbara appeared shocked but ultimately chose to conceal the incident from Jaden, labeling it as self-defense. The family struggled to come to terms with this hidden truth as they attempted to carry on, concluding an intriguing season for the show. However, a second season has been commissioned by Apple TV+, leaving us to ponder what new developments await.
What could Presumed Innocent season 2 be about?
In his literary work, Turow has penned numerous stories set within the same fictional realm. Yet crafting a legitimate sequel to “Presumed Innocent” proves to be a challenge. For instance, “The Burden of Proof” delved into the character of Sandy Stern, who represented Rusty during his trial. Notably, Raul Julia portrayed this role in the 1990 film adaptation, while Héctor Elizondo took on the part for the 1991 ABC miniseries. However, in the Apple TV+ production, Raymond Horgan (Bill Camp) assumes this responsibility instead.
Turow penned a follow-up story in 2010 titled “Innocent,” where Rusty and his adversary, Tommy Molto (Peter Sarsgaard), clash once more. This time, Rusty is under suspicion for murdering Barbara. This work was turned into a 2011 TNT series with Bill Pullman portraying Rusty. However, considering the plot takes place two decades after the initial investigation, it’s not fitting to employ it as a second installment in the series.
The show has the potential to transform into an anthology series, potentially adapting other Turow novels like “Pleading Guilty.” Since the books share the same universe, characters from one story could reappear or interact with those in another. If the show can’t secure Gyllenhaal and Negga for future seasons, it can continue by focusing on different characters and introducing new stories set within this established universe.
I’m a big fan of the show, and one character I think would make a great addition is Mya Winslow, also known as Gabby Beans, who joins Rusty’s legal team as an attorney. In the upcoming season, we could see her handling new cases or even bringing in other characters from Turow’s novels to mix things up. Yet, rest assured, the trusted prosecutors will still be around to keep the storyline grounded.
Apple TV+ might choose to adapt “Innocent” without the extended time jump and the courtroom defense sequence for Rusty. Alternatively, Kelly could create a fresh narrative based on Turow’s characters, featuring Rusty in a new case and encountering various obstacles.
The planning process is ongoing for Season 2 of “Presumed Innocent,” aiming to deliver another compelling legal story following the strong finish of Season 1.
