Presence review: The first great horror movie of 2025
2024 was a satisfying year for horror enthusiasts, as it ended with the unveiling of Nosferatu, although UK viewers had to watch it on New Year’s Day. Notably, we haven’t had to wait long for an impressive horror film in 2025 either.
In one of Steven Soderbergh’s two films this year, titled Presence, the traditional haunted-house genre is turned upside down. Rather than experiencing fear from a squeaky door or a sound echoing in a dim corridor, we, as viewers, become the specter causing those very spooky occurrences.
From the ghost’s own account, “Presence” offers a fresh spin on a traditional horror narrative. What truly sets it apart, however, is that it manages to transcend being merely a novelty, demonstrating depth beyond its initial premise, despite some script hiccups.
Following a spooky exploration of an unoccupied dwelling, we encounter the fresh residents settling in: Rebecca (portrayed by Lucy Liu), Chris (Chris Sullivan), along with their two adolescent offspring Tyler (Eddy Maday) and Chloe (Callina Liang).
At first glance, they appear as an ordinary family, but like any household, they face their share of challenges. Rebecca seems to be embroiled in questionable activities at work, and Chris is torn between accepting his fate or leaving it behind. In addition, Rebecca devotes most of her parental attention to Tyler, a budding swimmer, while Chloe, who has just lost her friend, gets a dismissive ‘get over it’ approach from her mother.
Incomplete details about their past are provided through fleeting glimpses rather than a comprehensive account. The opening part of the movie Presence consists of numerous short scenes without specified timeframes, making it challenging for the audience to follow due to its lack of clear chronology.
As you delve deeper into the story, it becomes apparent that the narrative and structure are seamlessly blending together. The unidentified spirit haunting this dwelling is “perplexed” about time, viewing past, present, and future as interchangeable. Since we’re experiencing events from its point of view, we too find ourselves intentionally disoriented.
In this film, the sequences become extended as the story unfolds, all captured in lengthy, uninterrupted shots. Soderbergh, who served not only as the director but also the cinematographer and editor, strictly adheres to the film’s concept without any deviations. It may appear peculiar that the ghost moves around doors instead of passing through them, yet this minor inconsistency can be overlooked in light of the enchantment it creates.
It’s easy to imagine some people doubting the terror-inducing qualities of the movie Presence, given that it may not be the most frightening film released this year. Instead, its horrors are subtler and delve into existential themes, such as grief and the heavy burden it carries, along with the chilling concept of being forgotten after death.
In simpler terms, David Koepp’s script, known for his collaboration with Soderbergh on the 2022 film ‘Kimi’ and the upcoming ‘Black Bag’, could benefit from being more concise. Instead of allowing us to piece together most of the story, the ending features a lengthy explanation by one character. On the other hand, some viewers might appreciate additional clarity regarding the ghostly guidelines.
The strength of the “Presence” script lies in subtly adding details that make multiple viewings worthwhile, once all information is known. Initially, its poignant ending may leave a chilling impression; however, upon rewatching, it encourages viewers to perceive events from a fresh perspective.
Although it may not satisfy those seeking typical horror movie thrills such as jump scares in a haunted house setting, the film “Presence” offers a fresh and innovative take by Steven Soderbergh. Unlike conventional fright flicks, this film leaves a lasting impression that lingers much longer.
Presence is out now in cinemas.
