Pregnant Olivia Culpo details traumatic first trimester that left her ‘bleeding everywhere’

In a recent video, Olivia Culpo openly shared about the distressing experience she faced during her first trimester of pregnancy. She disclosed that a blood clot in her womb led to excessive bleeding for her.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I am thrilled to share some exciting news: Despite battling the challenging condition of endometriosis, I, at the age of 32, am elated to announce that I’m expecting my first child with my remarkable partner, Christian McCaffrey, a 28-year-old NFL star.

Last week, a source revealed to DailyMail.com that Culpo is well into her second trimester of pregnancy.

In a TikTok video shared on Tuesday (originally filmed in December 2024), Culpo revealed that she endured a ‘subchorionic hematoma’ following several weeks of bed rest due to pneumonia while pregnant at nine weeks.

The expectant mother explained, “For the past four weeks, I’ve been confined to my bed. Before that, I suffered from pneumonia for two weeks as well. So, in total, I’ve been ill for four weeks.

After two weeks of severe illness, I developed a subchorionic hemorrhage, essentially a blood clot in my womb. Consequently, I experienced heavy bleeding throughout.

A subchorionic hematoma occurs when there’s pooling of blood beneath the chorion, which is the protective layer encompassing the developing fetus, as per the Cleveland Clinic.

Pregnant individuals frequently encounter this condition during their 10-20 week gestational period, and the primary symptom is vaginal bleeding.

Bleeding could potentially elevate the risk of complications during pregnancy, such as miscarriage or premature delivery. However, in many cases, a subchorionic hematoma may naturally heal without requiring any specific treatment.

Women experiencing uterine abnormalities, such as Culpo who openly discussed her struggle with endometriosis, may have a greater likelihood of developing subchorionic hematomas.

Culpo went on to say, “At that moment, I was extremely fatigued after two long weeks with no mobility. Suddenly, it felt like a massive release or emptying out, if you will.

She stressed that the bleeding was extremely ‘heavy.’

Culpo promptly consulted a doctor, feeling grateful to find out that her yet-to-be-born baby was fine.

‘I went to the doctor and it was exciting to see that there was still a heartbeat.’

Subsequently, she outlined the essential guidelines provided by her physician, emphasizing the importance of ample rest.

‘”You can’t go anywhere. You can’t travel.” Like, just truly staying in bed,’ Culpo explained.

Additionally, she mentioned that she began using vaginal progesterone suppositories, totalling 800 grams in weight. These supplements aid in boosting the levels of the hormone progesterone, which is crucial during pregnancy.

Culpo stated that the suppositories aid in creating an ideal setting for the baby, as they relax the uterus and facilitate the attachment of the placenta by soothing it.

Regardless of the health issue and several weeks spent in bed, Culpo shared with her 836,000 TikTok followers that she felt truly thankful for the fact that things have been progressing smoothly thus far.

She then spoke directly to those who may also be suffering from a subchorionic hematoma.

Culpo stated, ‘I trust this video may prove helpful for you. It’s important to remember that excessive bleeding during the first trimester doesn’t necessarily mean the situation is as dire as you might be worrying.’

She strongly feels that it’s the progesterone suppositories that have kept her pregnancy going.

Later on, Culpo appeared noticeably moved as she empathized with individuals who have experienced a miscarriage or pregnancy loss.

She remarked, “I didn’t anticipate this video would stir such strong emotions.” She went on to share, “For those of you who might be experiencing any aspect of pregnancy that leaves you feeling isolated, receiving news you weren’t hoping for, or questioning why it’s happening to you: I send my heartfelt prayers and well wishes for your journey, as well as everyone else navigating their maternity experience.

I, being an over-the-moon fan, couldn’t wait for my idol’s latest pregnancy update! You might recall that just a few days ago, she shared a heartfelt TikTok video revealing her baby’s gender. As predicted, it was as thrilling as ever to watch the big reveal!

In an entertaining video, Culpo, noticeably pregnant and wearing a gray maxi dress accentuating both her baby bump and her growing cleavage, humorously explored various old-fashioned beliefs about predicting the gender of a child.

She believed in the age-old beliefs suggesting that a pregnant woman’s symptoms might indicate whether she’ll give birth to a son or a daughter.

She exhibited signs suggesting she was carrying a female child, such as frequent morning sickness, breakouts, and her baby’s heart rate below 140 beats per minute.

In the end, Culpo erred on the side of her intuition, which is telling her she’s having a boy.

On March 10, they shared on social media that they, along with Christian McCaffrey, are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first baby.

Culpo captioned the pregnancy post: ‘Next chapter, motherhood.’

Moreover, she additionally posted a video showcasing herself and McCaffrey affectionately linked arms and exchanging sweet kisses amidst the great outdoors.

The pair, together since 2019 and officially married during an extravagant summer wedding in Rhode Island last year, have not disclosed the sex of their upcoming baby as of now.

McCaffrey plays the leading role as a running back for the San Francisco 49ers, whereas Culpo is a renowned actress, fashion model, and past beauty pageant winner.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but express my fascination with the fact that she’s been vocal about her dream of starting a family with McCaffrey, yet at the same time, she’s openly discussed her ongoing struggle with endometriosis.

In the 2022 installment of ‘Culpo Sisters’, she expressed a desire to have children while ensuring it’s possible. She mentioned that conception might pose challenges for her due to certain difficulties.

She noted that Endometriosis may impact your ability to conceive in various manners. For instance, endometrial growths might occur close to or directly on your ovaries. This could potentially influence the health of your eggs, and it might also result in scarring of your fallopian tubes.

As someone deeply invested, I can’t help but acknowledge the uncertainty surrounding the evolution of this health concern in the coming days. This ambiguity often leaves me preoccupied, constantly pondering about potential timelines. It seems that the desire to start a family is pressing, as if time is running out.

During the initial stages of her pregnancy, she faced some tough times. Besides battling morning sickness, she found it challenging to engage in physical activities at first.

During the initial four months of my pregnancy, I found it challenging to exercise at all – not even a simple walk. (Instagram story on March 12)
