Pregnant Katherine Ryan admits she’s feeling ‘dejected’ at the thought of her next baby being a boy as she’s been ‘antagonised by men’ throughout her life and jokes her son is a ‘toxic male’

Katherine Ryan has confessed that she’s feeling quite disheartened about the possibility of her upcoming child being a son.

The 42-year-old comedian, currently pregnant with her fourth child alongside husband Bobby Kootstra, is a mother to a four-year-old son named Fred, along with two daughters – 16-year-old Violet and two-year-old Fenna.

In a recent conversation, Katherine expressed her apprehension about expanding her family with another son, as she has frequently faced antagonism from men during her lifetime.

The television host playfully commented that her son, Fred, exhibits traits of a “problematic man” while sharing her experiences with feelings of letdown due to gender-related expectations.

On Heart Breakfast, Monday found me conversing with Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman, where I shared my honest feelings as I prepare for the arrival of my fourth little one.

She shared: “After the first trimester, I’ve never had much to complain about, as I’ve grown quite large. Given this, I believe it might be a boy, and this thought saddens me because men have generally caused me distress throughout my life, even before they were born.

The star clarified the genders of her kids so far, saying “Girl, boy, girl,” and then added that she never learns the baby’s gender prior to birth.

‘It’s always a surprise and I love that, it’s vintage’, she explained.

Nine out of ten preferred individuals later admitted that they might experience ‘disappointment concerning gender’ when their forthcoming child is a boy, as they discussed their four-year-old son.

She informed the hosts: “If he’s a boy this time, I will definitely keep him. You’re aware of my current situation – my son, who is four, often acts aggressively towards me. The other day, I drove him to nursery, and during the ride, he held a toy sword against my throat for a while.

It’s as if someone is providing you with tools. I didn’t have brothers during my upbringing, so I’ve found it challenging. Yet, I genuinely care for him; he’s quite unique.

As a lifestyle guide, I’d like to share an update from Katherine, who recently announced her pregnancy. Over the past few years, she’s bravely shared her journey with fertility challenges, and in 2024, she disclosed that she had experienced three miscarriages within a span of five years. Her courage in speaking about these experiences serves as an inspiration to many who face similar struggles.

In November, Katherine confessed her desire for additional children; however, she expressed concerns due to her advanced age.

She humorously remarked, “I thought I would be more of a father figure due to my employment, but it turns out I’m more like a grandma. My body may not be as youthful anymore, but I do spoil them with treats and provide them with fun.

In the year 2022, the popular TV personality chose to conceal her second pregnancy due to fear that disclosure might result in a loss of job opportunities.

In the throes of anticipation, I, hidden under the veil of secrecy, found myself eight months along during my stint on ITV’s Ready To Mingle – a truth I kept tucked away from all.

Since 2018, Katherine and her long-time companion, Bobby, have been a couple. They’ve known one another since their childhood days spent growing up in Canada.

In a heartwarming twist of fate, I found myself reunited with my first love across the ocean, after years apart. Our bond, forged in childhood, had never truly faded – it just needed the right distance to reignite.

In the recently aired episodes of their reality series, the couple shared that they were considering the possibility of adding another member to their family by having a fourth child.

In the show, the couple delved into the challenges of their marriage during therapy sessions, followed by seeking help at a fertility center.

As I shared earlier this year, I openly acknowledged the difficulties we’d likely encounter when considering another addition to our family, given Bobby and my advancing ages.

Katherine mentioned that it’s not too unexpected for more than 40 women to have fewer hair follicles now compared to before. However, she pointed out that we also need to discuss men’s fertility issues, as they are rapidly decreasing too. Despite this, she still desires another child.

‘We feel incredibly fortunate to have the children we do. Not everyone chooses to have kids, but for me, nurturing new life feels like a unique gift. If one has the ability to create life, I believe that’s a remarkable power.’

At that point, she clarified their unique predicament – they’d never experienced fertility issues before, yet they’d endured numerous miscarriages.

She shared that we’ve typically conceived our children rapidly. Over the past five years, I’ve been pregnant five times, which might seem like a blessing, but it also implies that I’ve experienced three miscarriages in those same years. As one gets older, the risk of such occurrences tends to rise.
