These stories were authentic and fitting for their era. The 2010 film, Predators, wasn’t poor, as it involved humans on an alien world being hunted. However, it largely resembled the setting of the first movie.

In the AVP movies, the setting was Earth, featuring temples, pyramids, and high-tech weaponry as a main attraction. Shane Black’s The Predator seemed like a continuation of AVP, where Earth’s hunters were given armor resembling Iron Man’s to pursue the Yautja. Unfortunately, the series didn’t seem to evolve as fans had hoped; they wished for the franchise to explore new planets or different eras to bring something fresh and exciting.

In Naru’s time during the Comanche era, there was a sense of rejuvenation. The surroundings took on a life of their own, acting as a character itself. This is the kind of setting where Predators and humans must fight: dynamic landscapes that offer challenges for both sides. Animation excels in this regard, as it can steer clear of monotonous narratives that seem repetitive and unoriginal.

Animated Predator Stories Can Economically Explore New Planets, More Eras and the Yautja Homeworld

In June 2025, Shawn Levy’s upcoming Hulu anthology film, “Killer of Killers,” will delve into the history of the Yautja species, exploring their hunts before and following the events depicted in the “Prey” movie and the live-action films. This is a dream come true for fans of the Predator comics by Dark Horse Comics, who have longed for such stories. These tales feature the Predator engaged in conflicts, such as battles in the Middle East, and “Killer of Killers” is carrying on this tradition by portraying the Predators battling Vikings in snowy landscapes, engaging samurais and ninjas during Japan’s feudal era, and even targeting World War II Allied aircraft.

The trailer showcases spectacular scenes that might be difficult or costly to execute in reality. Even if live-action is employed, the CGI might not appear authentic enough. However, animation offers an effortless and fluid appearance. Furthermore, it provides an advantage as it allows the series to explore numerous eras, cultures, and environments. This means we’ll see Predators and humans clashing in the skies or even underwater. The battlefield is no longer limited to land; instead, each participant must strive to be the top dog in these new territories.

Transforming the backdrop serves as a means to intensify the challenges for the top predators, indicating that Trachtenberg’s creative crew has grasped the necessity of increased hardship. By employing diverse landscapes such as those near volcanoes, in the Knights Templar era, or even during the Caveman age like in ‘Primal’, or perhaps with pirates, we can create a more terrifying environment for Predators to battle. Similarly, Marvel depicted humans hunting Predators across various planets in future times. In the case of ‘Badlands’, it leans towards the latter, but animation could effectively augment all these different eras to optimally expand the Predator Universe.

There’s an opportunity to delve deeper into the Yautja world by conducting studies that reveal their internal struggles, historical conflicts like civil wars, and societal structures such as the caste system. This exploration could expand our understanding of the Yautja society, potentially including female Yautja, young Predators, more Predator hounds, and other aspects that would give us a holistic view. The result might resemble a blend of ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Wars’, with complex societal themes like capitalism and slavery. Notably, Disney has successfully used animation to critically acclaim their ‘Star Wars’ series, such as ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’, ‘Star Wars Rebels’, ‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch’, and now a new one. Similarly, Marvel and DC are also exploring this approach.

As a cinema enthusiast, I’ve always been intrigued by the diverse artistic approaches seen in productions like Netflix’s “Love, Death + Robots” and “Arcane”. These shows cleverly interweave photorealism with traditional cartoon aesthetics, much like Sony’s Spider-Verse. This blend captivates both old and new viewers by tapping into nostalgia and introducing fresh perspectives to a new generation. Modern audiences crave adaptable narratives that reflect the advancements in science and modern filmmaking. Animation offers numerous benefits, including faster storytelling pace, lower costs compared to live-action projects, and the potential for captivating visuals. While maintaining its character-driven narrative, 20th Century Studios could leverage these advantages to create more visually striking Predator stories, thereby enhancing the overall appeal of this franchise.
