Predator: Badlands’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed

The popular sci-fi series is in capable hands moving forward. With the recent release earning positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, director Dan Trachtenberg has shared some insights into what fans can expect next.

As of today, Predator: Badlands has a respectable 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 51 critic reviews. However, surprisingly, this is actually the lowest score of any Predator movie directed by Dan Trachtenberg. Earlier this year’s animated anthology, Predator: Killer of Killers, leads the pack with a 95% ‘fresh’ rating, closely followed by Prey at 94%. Despite being Trachtenberg’s lowest, Badlands‘ score is still much higher than most other films in the Predator franchise. For comparison, the original Predator and Predators both scored 65%, Predator 2 received 36%, and The Predator only 34%. The crossover films Alien vs. Predator (21%) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (12%) fared even worse.

Early reviews suggest that Dan Trachtenberg’s latest Predator film, Badlands, is a hit with audiences. Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky praised the movie for both innovating the franchise and staying true to its exciting action roots. Jordan Farley from GamesRadar+ agreed, highlighting Trachtenberg’s successful transformation of the Predator from a villain into a sympathetic hero that viewers will be rooting for. Farley described the lead character as a welcome addition to the world of blockbusters.

I really enjoyed Predator: Badlands too, and thought it was a great addition to the Predator series. It kept me hooked the whole time – the pacing was spot-on and the action never let up! But it wasn’t universally loved, apparently. Some critics had issues with the Predator being portrayed differently – not as that totally ruthless hunter we’re used to. One reviewer even felt it tried too hard to appeal to a wider audience and lost some of the original’s gritty, R-rated edge.

What’s Next for the Predator Franchise After Badlands?

The new movie Badlands received its first Rotten Tomatoes score shortly after director Dan Trachtenberg discussed his plans for another Predator film. In a recent interview, Trachtenberg revealed he has an idea for a fourth installment in the Predator franchise. He explained that he was considering several options after making Prey, including Badlands, Killer Killers, and this third project, all of which he found equally appealing, and he’s very enthusiastic about pursuing it. He jokingly mentioned they’re still figuring things out with the Yautja (the Predators) after just finishing the current movie a week or two ago.

While Trachtenberg enjoys working on Predator films and hopes Badlands is well-received, he also wants to expand his filmmaking beyond the franchise. He’s been able to realize his creative vision within the Predator universe, which has been very appealing, but ultimately desires to make a wider variety of movies.

Predator: Badlands opens in theaters this Friday, Nov. 7.
