Predator: Badlands Breaks 2 Major Franchise Records 38 Years Later

I just saw the newest Predator movie, and it’s amazing! It came out on November 7th and is already doing really well. It’s the eighth movie in the series, which started back in 1987 with the original, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers – a classic!

Elle Fanning stars in Predator: Badlands, which earned $40 million in its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing opening weekend for any Predator movie. The previous record of $38.2 million was held by Alien vs. Predator from 2004. Predator: Badlands also received an A- CinemaScore, the best score of any film in the Predator series.

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg and produced by Ben Rosenblatt and John Davis, Predator: Badlands had a strong opening weekend, becoming the second-highest debut for Elle Fanning in the U.S., following 2014’s Maleficent, which earned $69.4 million. The project began development in 2023 with writer Patrick Aison, and filming started in New Zealand in June 2024.

Critics and audiences alike are praising Predator: Badlands. It currently has an 85% ‘Fresh’ rating from critics and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on almost 100 reviews. One reviewer highlighted the film’s skillful balance of elements and its ability to connect character development with the story’s core themes. They particularly noted the compelling journey of the character Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), describing it as a powerful story of discovery, adaptation, and personal growth.

Badlands Director Talks About His Inspiration for the Film

I really enjoy working on the Predator series. It would be great to continue making these kinds of films, and I’d also like to explore stories that aren’t always focused on Predators. This franchise has actually allowed me to create the movies I’ve always envisioned, so I’m hoping audiences enjoy Badlands and want to see more.

Trachtenberg described the dynamic between Fanning’s character, Thia, and Schuster-Koloamatangi’s Dek as reminiscent of “Chewbacca and C-3PO: The Movie.” However, he pointed out that while C-3PO is anxious, Thia is remarkably calm and optimistic, even in difficult situations. He highlighted a moment in the trailer where Thia cheerfully appears after defeating dangerous creatures as an example of her personality. He explained that pairing this upbeat character with a stoic and taciturn Predator – someone like Clint Eastwood, Mad Max, or Conan – creates a compelling contrast.

Predator: Badlands is playing in movie theaters.
