Predator 2: Why We Need It Now More Than Ever

Among the 2025 movies I’m eagerly waiting for, “Predator: Badlands” holds a special place. However, it’s not my most eagerly anticipated Predator film. The Predator series has embarked on a new era lately, with “Prey” paving the way for the action movie sequence. Following “Prey”, “Predator: Badlands” promises a fresh perspective on the classic formula. I’m looking forward to the release of “Predator: Badlands”, and though it will be thrilling to explore the Predators’ planet, it doesn’t hold the most intriguing storyline that the franchise is set to unveil.

As a diehard movie enthusiast, let me tell you that the upcoming film, Predator: Badlands, stands out from the rest in the Predator series. For the first time ever, this movie introduces a Predator as the main character, named Dek. Joining forces with a Weyland-Yutani android called Thia, they explore what appears to be the home planet of these extraterrestrial hunters. The recently released trailer for Predator: Badlands is nothing short of breathtaking, showcasing an alien world teeming with exotic flora and fauna, not to mention the formidable Predator adversaries. With a Predator protagonist, we’re in for a fresh, captivating tale that’s sure to leave us on the edge of our seats!

Prey 2 Is The Predator Movie I’m Really Looking Forward To

After The Success Of 2022’s Prey

As a die-hard fan of the Predator series, I’ve got to say that the upcoming movie, Predator: Badlands, sounds like it could be a blast! It certainly looks promising as a way to propel the franchise forward. Yet, my anticipation is skyrocketing for none other than Prey 2. The 2022 release, Prey, marked the first Predator film since 2018’s The Predator, and I have to admit, after the letdown of the 2018 reboot, I held back my excitement. But boy, was I wrong! Prey turned out to be an exceptional addition to the series. The film takes us back in time, focusing on a Predator who confronts a Comanche woman named Naru in the Great Plains. The intriguing concept and improved quality make Prey my top pick among all the Predator films.

Although the 2022 film “Prey” was a hit, no direct follow-up has been officially confirmed as of now. Instead, the Predator franchise has chosen to develop spin-offs like “Predator: Badlands” and “Predator: Killer of Killers”, focusing on different Predators in various settings and timelines. Even though I’m eager for more Predator projects that live up to the quality of “Prey”, I still yearn for a genuine “Prey” sequel, as there is much unexplored ground left to cover. Frankly, I would prefer a continuation of the Prey storyline over another new Predator tale.

The movie Prey hints at potential storylines for a sequel, which makes it even more disheartening that a continuation titled Prey 2 is yet to materialize. At the end of the film’s credits, artwork reveals three additional Predators preparing to confront the Comanche. If the characters from Prey were pitted against an even more menacing Predator horde, it would naturally raise the stakes, with Naru and others battling a larger swarm of extraterrestrial beings.

Amber Midthunder’s Naru Is A Great Character I Want To Spend More Time With

Especially After The End Of Prey

One standout aspect of the sci-fi thriller Prey lies in its leading character, Naru. In many ways, she mirrors the protagonist from the initial film, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character. Unlike the warriors who surround her, Naru often finds herself outmaneuvering the Predator not by relying on brute force, but through strategic thinking. Her resourcefulness comes into play when she seizes and utilizes the weapons of the Predators, making her the only one to successfully engage with this alien adversary.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but express my awe at Amber Midthunder’s captivating portrayal of Naru in the movie, Prey. Her performance is simply extraordinary and leaves viewers yearning to support her character. The climax of Prey sees Naru not only gaining respect from her tribe but also triumphing over the Predator. Given the close call she had with the solitary Predator in Prey, a sequel, Prey 2, could present an intriguing scenario where the tribe turns to Naru for guidance as they confront a fresh wave of Predator threats. Overcoming just one Predator was no easy feat for Naru, so facing off against three of them in a potential Prey 2 would undoubtedly be an even more daunting challenge.

Prey 2’s Setting Is More Interesting Than A Futuristic Predator Movie

The 1700s Still Have So Much To Offer

In the film “Predator: Badlands”, we find an engaging narrative as it marks the first Predator movie since 2010’s “Predators” to be set on a distant alien planet. The teaser for “Predator: Badlands” indicates that this alien world is filled with intrigue, as the characters have already come across strange creatures and environments. However, because of its alien planet setting, “Predator: Badlands” will likely be less realistic compared to “Prey”. Although this departure from reality isn’t necessarily a negative aspect, the concept of Predators hunting humans in an unknown environment is entertaining, but it deviates from what made the premise of “Prey” so captivating.

The historical backdrop of Prey in the 1700s offers a wealth of potential narratives yet untapped, as the inclusion of fur trappers merely hints at the depth that this era could offer. The film has room to delve deeper into the intriguing intersection of the period’s real-world setting and advanced alien technology. By expanding on the contrast between the Predators and Native Americans, the movie can enrich the original film’s themes, providing a more profound and significant narrative exploration.

Prey 2 Could Benefit From Predator: Badlands Coming First

Based On The Film’s Box Office

Although I’m more eager for the release of Prey 2 compared to Predator: Badlands, it might work better if Predator: Badlands comes out first. This is because Predator: Badlands is set to be released before Prey 2, which means there will likely still be some waiting time until the sequel hits screens, should it go ahead. The delay could actually benefit the film since a futuristic Predator movie has been out since the original Prey. Furthermore, the gap between releases will give the actors from the first Prey time to age naturally, allowing for the characters in Prey 2 to be portrayed as older.

Initially, the first “Prey” movie was exclusively available on Hulu, which somewhat diminished its appeal. On a positive note, “Predator: Badlands” is set for a theatrical premiere. If this film becomes extremely popular, there’s a chance that “Prey 2” might follow suit with a theater release, potentially boosting its success. The earnings of “Predator: Badlands” could also increase the budget for “Prey 2,” paving the way for a more elaborate storyline. Conversely, if “Predator: Badlands” underperforms at the box office, it could negatively impact “Prey 2,” making its success uncertain, or in other words, a risky proposition.
