The Power Rangers movie was supposed to be the beginning of something bigger.
Dacre Montgomery, who played Jason Scott in the 2017 Power Rangers movie, has shared details about a cancelled plan to make four Power Rangers films. This movie was a fresh start for the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers story, following a team of teenagers who work together as the Power Rangers to save the world, but it didn’t perform well in theaters, leading to the plan being scrapped.
In a recent interview with MovieWeb, actor Montgomery shared that the 2017 Power Rangers film was originally planned as the first of four movies by Lionsgate. The studio envisioned a franchise similar to The Hunger Games. Unfortunately, because the first film didn’t do well in theaters, the remaining movies were canceled.
It was a four-picture deal with Lionsgate.
There were big plans for the show, but ultimately it didn’t make enough money for the studio to continue with it. I’ve heard they’re planning a reboot, and it sounds like the rights have been sold, which is exciting. Power Rangers is important to so many people, so I’m confident whoever takes it on next will do a fantastic job. I really enjoyed my time working on it.
Despite being a well-known franchise with a lot of history, the 2017 Power Rangers movie didn’t make enough money to warrant any follow-up films. While it earned $142.5 million, with a production cost of $100-105 million, it was considered a box office disappointment. This ultimately led to Saban selling the Power Rangers rights to Hasbro.
It makes sense that the 2017 movie was intended to be the start of a bigger story. The film largely retold the first episode of the original series, “Day of the Dumpster,” and included bits and pieces from the beginning of season one. The movie also hinted at the future appearance of Tommy Oliver, who famously joins the team as the Green Ranger.
The movie Power Rangers received mixed reviews from critics, earning a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes after 179 reviews. Viewers generally liked it more, giving it a 65% rating based on over 25,000 votes. However, despite these ratings, the film didn’t make enough money to move forward with the planned four-movie series.
Haim Saban, who created Power Rangers, once discussed making six movies continuing the original story. Ideas were being considered for sequels featuring both Tommy and Lord Zedd, as it seemed like the natural way to move the films forward. However, according to Montgomery, those plans never materialized, even though Power Rangers was a very popular franchise.
There’s good news for fans of Power Rangers! A reboot is in the works that promises a fresh take on the series. The team behind the Percy Jackson and the Olympians show – Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz – will be writing, producing, and running the new Power Rangers series, which will eventually stream on Disney+.
It’s currently unknown whether the upcoming show will be a complete restart of the series or a continuation of the existing storyline. Either way, it offers a chance to tell a new story within the franchise. Sadly, plans for a follow-up to the 2017 movie have been cancelled, which is disappointing for fans who were excited about where that story could have gone.
Despite the fact that a new Power Rangers movie isn’t currently in development, the existing film still offers a fascinating glimpse of what a large-scale cinematic adaptation of the franchise could be. Even though it wasn’t a financial success, the movie remains a notable part of the Power Rangers legacy, regardless of how critics or audiences received it.
