Power Rangers Documentary Exposes Dark Secrets, But Misses This Shocking Truth!

During the 1990s, no TV series evoked my childhood more than Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. If only I could’ve been among the teens chosen by Zordon to protect Earth from evil back then… However, my sentiments have shifted since I saw a recent documentary (available with a Max subscription).

In the third installment of “Hollywood Demons,” titled “Dark Side of the Power Rangers,” some shocking truths about the series’ famous actors were unveiled, including previously unknown details concerning the demise of Jason David Frank, who played Tommy Oliver, and the fraud-related arrest of Austin St. John, the original Red Ranger. However, there was a disheartening backstage tale that I had anticipated would be addressed in the documentary but was surprisingly omitted. Let me share some insights on this subject instead.

The Original Blue Ranger Actor Was Bullied For His Sexuality

In its initial run, the Power Rangers series known as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (originally a revamped American version of Japan’s Super Sentai Zyuranger) featured David Yost as the Blue Ranger, Billy Cranston. In an interview with No Pink Spandex in 2010, Yost openly disclosed his homosexuality for the first time and shared that this aspect of his identity impacted his experience on the show. He was subjected to a derogatory slur so frequently on set that he became concerned it might drive him to suicide.

Following the debut of “Power Rangers Zeo” in 1996, Yost left the series and spent the subsequent two years attempting to suppress his sexuality through prayer, which ultimately led to a mental breakdown that required him to be hospitalized for five weeks. After recovering, he relocated to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for a year, where he was able to embrace his authentic self.

David Yost Would Reprise Billy Years Later

Even though Yost had a tough reason for departing the Power Rangers franchise initially, he hasn’t completely abandoned his “morphin time.” In more recent times, the actor has been quite active at conventions, where he is warmly received for his portrayal of Billy. Interestingly, his exit from Power Rangers Zeo wasn’t his final appearance in the blue suit.

2023 saw Yost appearing in the Netflix-exclusive special titled “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always”, a 30th anniversary celebration. This event brought him together with Walter Emanuel Jones as Zack Taylor, Karan Ashley as Aisha Campbell, and other cast members from the initial series. In addition, he resurfaced in the role later that year for an episode of “Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury”, marking the 30th version of the franchise.

In 2016, the media discussed David Yost’s challenges, as Bryan Cranston, who played Zordon in the 2017 reboot, apologized for an insensitive joke about Yost’s sexuality from a 2009 IGN interview. This apology came after Yost was left out of “Dark Side of the Power Rangers,” which is unexpected given his struggles. Fortunately, he persevered and overcame his ordeal, something not all Power Rangers stars can claim. It seems that the makers of “Hollywood Demons” prioritized more heartbreaking tales, but I believe Yost deserved a chance to share his story as well.
