Powderfinger’s Bernard Fanning and Something For Kate’s Paul Dempsey divide ABC viewers with New Year’s Eve performance: ‘Ancient crones’
As a dedicated follower of Australian rock music spanning decades, I must say that Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey’s performance at the ABC was nothing short of electrifying. Being present during the 90s alt-rock scene, witnessing Powderfinger and Something For Kate rise to fame, and seeing them reunite in more recent years has been a profound journey. Their friendship, as evident in their collaborations like the viral Under Pressure cover during the pandemic, adds an authenticity that resonates deeply with fans.
Their latest project, Fanning Dempsey National Park, is a testament to their shared passion for music and their ability to transcend individual styles. It’s refreshing to see them push boundaries and create something unique together. The name alone, with its pompous yet amusing connotation, shows that they haven’t lost their sense of humor even after all these years.
I can only imagine what it would be like if they decided to open a national park filled with the nostalgic melodies of their combined repertoire—now that would be a destination worth visiting!
On Tuesday night, Australian rock veterans Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey sparked debate among ABC viewers during their performance at the network’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.
This year, the well-known musicians made their grand entrance on stage as the fresh duo known as Fanning Dempsey National Park. It’s the band they introduced for the first time with their inaugural collaborative album titled Deluge.
Currently, the lead vocalists from Powderfinger and Something For Kate are performing a mix of cover tunes and their own compositions, but not everyone watching X was pleased by their appearance.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must confess that Bernard Fanning’s rendition of “These Days” during the ABCNYE coverage has left me longing for a different kind of new year.
Someone mentioned: ‘Veteran musicians Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey occasionally use falsetto, while donning a less-than-impressive, brown suit.’
Regardless of some negative comments made on what used to be called Twitter, a multitude of fans rallied to back the iconic Australian rock band.
The viewer at home wasn’t fond of the ABC, but they found the Paul Dempsey and Bernard Fanning concert to be spot on.
‘Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey. On fire. Brilliant,’ another commented.
I’ve been a devoted fan of ABC for quite some time now, and I must say that Something For Kate and Bernard Fanning are hands down my favorite acts on the channel. They consistently outshine the other performers, even during the 9pm fireworks, which are usually a spectacle to behold. As someone who’s seen countless artists and shows, I can confidently assert that these two stand out as exceptional talents in the Australian music scene.
One viewer expressed their surprise, saying, “I’m truly astonished at how excellent this year’s concert has been. It never occurred to me that Bernard Fanning could have a sound similar to Bowie.
55-year-old Bernard and 48-year-old Paul recently debuted their freshly formed group, Fanning Dempsey National Park, to the public this year.
The debuted their first album Deluge shortly after with Disconnect the name of its leading single.
Just a few weeks after their initial performance, they made their live debut in October as part of the Deluge Tour, performing in cities such as Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, and then making a return visit to Brisbane.
In a video posted on Instagram in May, Bernard stated that the first single, “Disconnect,” is about leaving a relationship that no longer functions effectively for you.
Later on, Paul mentioned: ‘Initially, it had a vibe reminiscent of a gospel tune, but as I worked on it, the drums became more powerful and the guitar lines became catchier.’
‘Then we started throwing horns at everything and suddenly the party was on.’
Disclosing that iconic rock vocalists Bernard and Paul are teaming up for a brand-new band, they expressed their intention to break free from conventional norms.
In an interview with ABC in May, Bernard explained that they aimed to create something that didn’t resemble a Fanning-style recording or a Dempsey-style recording; instead, their goal was to produce music that sounded as if it were made by a band.
They chose the name “Fanning Dempsey National Park” to convey an impression of an organization that is larger and more expansive than just the two of them.
‘It’s so pompous that it made us laugh every time we said it,’ Paul joked.
Bernard and Paul have been close friends for many years, dating back to when their bands, Powderfinger and Something For Kate, made a splash on the alternative rock scene during the 1990s.
During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, they grew even more intimate after recording a popular video where they covered Queen and David Bowie’s iconic duet “Under Pressure.
Additionally, Bernard contributed his voice to the track “Inside Job” on Something For Kate’s 2020 album, The Modern Medieval.
Since then, the duo has been exchanging music and concepts digitally, which eventually grew into their latest rock group.
Powderfinger originated in Brisbane back in 1989, but it wasn’t until 1992 that the band consisted of Bernard, Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, John Collins, and Jon Coghill, who stayed together until 2010.
While the band officially broke up in 2010, they have reunited multiple times in recent years.
Back in the year of ’94, I found my musical soulmates in Something For Kate, a trio born from the minds of Paul and Clint Hyndman. Fast forward to ’98, and the enchanting Stephanie Ashworth joined the ranks. To this very day, they remain an unbroken, harmonious unit.
